How to use Shopify customer segments for on-site messages
Show VIP, lapsed or high-spend offers to signed-in customers in a Shopify customer segment, and use page and cart rules when the moment matters more than the account.

Shopify customer segments let you match on-site messages to signed-in customers who already fit a rule you care about. Guests and signed-out shoppers never match a segment. Use segments for VIP, lapsed, or high-spend offers. Use page and cart conditions when the moment matters more than the account.
You will see when a segment belongs on a campaign. You will also see the five segments Atomato creates at install, plus a before and after for VIP versus Re-Engagement copy.
What a customer segment does on your storefront
A Shopify customer segment is a saved group of customers in your admin. On the storefront, Atomato can limit a campaign to that group when the shopper is signed in. Segment matching is account-based. It is not a guess from cookies alone.
Audience options for most campaigns include all shoppers, visitors who are not signed in, signed-in customers, chosen Shopify customer segments, or chosen customers.
NotiSell campaigns offer all shoppers, segments, or chosen customers. Segments and chosen customers only match customers signed in to their account.
The five segments Atomato creates at install
When you install Atomato, it creates five Shopify customer segments. Each name includes an Atomato prefix so you can find them in admin. The groups are:
- Customers tagged VIP
- Re-Engagement, for customers whose last order was more than 60 days ago
- Customers whose last order was more than a month ago
- Customers who have spent over 100 in your store currency
- New customers, with no orders yet
Start with these five. Do not invent extra segment names in your campaign plan until you have built and tested them in Shopify first.
Signed-in customers only
This limit decides most segment campaigns. A segment only matches when the customer is signed in. A guest who fits the same purchase history still will not see the segment campaign. A returning buyer who never signs in will not see it either.
If most traffic stays signed out, put the main offer on all shoppers or on visitors who are not signed in.
Save segment campaigns for account holders who open the feed or see a small on-site message while logged in.
Atomato cannot target on a form submission. It cannot hide a campaign from people already on your email list. It cannot detect when a product is back in stock.
Keep those jobs in your email or SMS platform. Use the feed for messages you post yourself.
When to use a segment versus everyone versus page and cart
Pick the audience by the job, not by habit.
- All shoppers: one clear storewide message, such as a launch in NotiFeed or a short NotiPop for a deadline every visitor can use
- Shopify customer segment: an offer that only makes sense for signed-in VIP, lapsed, high-spend, or new-account customers
- Page URL, UTM, device, cart value, cart items, cart products, or exit intent: the shopper's current moment matters more than their account
You can combine an audience with conditions when both matter. Example: a Re-Engagement segment plus a product page URL. A lapsed customer who lands on that page sees a return offer, not a generic welcome. Cart and exit intent conditions work for NotiFeed, NotiPop, and NotiSell. They do not work for signups.
For page and cart targeting without spraying the whole store, see how to target Shopify on-site messages by page and cart.
Before and after: same offer, two segment messages
One discount line for every signed-in customer wastes the segment. Split the job.
Before, one message for every signed-in customer:
Welcome back. Here is 20% off everything.
After, VIP segment:
Thanks for being a VIP. Early access to the new drop is live in the feed.
After, Re-Engagement segment:
It has been a while. Here is what is new since your last order.
Keep NotiPop to one job in a short title and one short line. Put reopenable detail in a NotiFeed card so signed-in customers can come back to it. For surface-matched length, see how to write Shopify on-site message copy shoppers finish reading.
Mistakes that break segment campaigns
- Expecting guests to match a VIP or Re-Engagement segment
- Running the same percent-off line for VIP and lapsed buyers
- Stacking a segment campaign on top of a storewide toast with the same CTA
- Using a segment when a cart-value condition would do the job for everyone in session
- Treating New customers (no orders yet) the same as every first-time visitor who never signs in
If you also split offers by first visit versus return visit in your own popup tool, keep that logic there. Atomato segment matching still needs a signed-in customer for VIP, spend, and order-history groups. For broader first-visit versus return offer planning outside segments, see how to show different Shopify on-site offers to new and returning visitors.
What to do next
Open Shopify customer segments and find the five Atomato-prefixed groups. Decide which one signed-in customers should see this week. Pair it with a NotiFeed card they can reopen, or a short NotiPop for one timed job. Leave guests on a separate all-shoppers or not-signed-in audience so the segment offer stays honest.
Atomato works alongside your popup, email, and SMS tools. It does not replace them, and it does not send emails or texts itself.
