TARGETING
Show each message
to the shoppers it is for
Decide who sees each NotiFeed, NotiPop, NotiSell and NotiEmail message, on which pages, devices and carts, and when a NotiPop appears. Customer Segments and the rules under Target visitors based on are included on every plan, Starter included.
Customer Segments and targeting rules are on every plan, Starter included.
Who sees a campaign: a customer group, plus page, UTM, cart, device or exit intent rules.
HOW IT WORKS
Two checks on every message
Switch on Target visitors based on and click Add rule for each rule. Next to Conditions must match:, choose all conditions, where every rule has to match, or any condition, where one is enough. Switching Target visitors based on off clears its rules.
Customer Segments is a separate check. A message shows only when the shopper is in its customer group and its rules under Target visitors based on also match. Campaigns created from the SKIO integration add Integration rules with their own all conditions or any condition choice, and those must match as well.
Each message has its own settings. On Scale and above, a NotiFeed or NotiPop campaign can hold up to 6 messages under Multi notifications, each with its own audience and rules.
What you can target
- Customer groupsSwitch on Customer Segments to show a message to All customers, Visitors (not signed in), Customers (signed in), Specific customer segments from your Shopify admin, or Specific customers you pick.
- Page and UTM rulesShow a message on the pages you choose, or to shoppers who land from a link with a UTM tag such as utm_source=instagram. Both rules use Is equal to, Is not equal to, Contains or Does not contain.
- Rules that follow the cartCart value, Cart items and Cart products rules are checked when a page loads and again when your theme updates the cart without a reload, so a message appears once the cart matches and goes away if it stops matching. With some themes, a cart change only counts from the next page load.
- Device and Exit IntentLimit a message to Desktop or Mobile, or show it with Exit Intent when the mouse pointer leaves through the top of the browser window.
- NotiPop timingUnder Display rules, a NotiPop can appear after a Delay, once the shopper has Scrolled part of the page, or after a period of Inactivity. Hide after sets how long it stays on screen.
- SKIO subscriber rulesOn Enterprise+, NotiFeed and NotiPop campaigns created from the SKIO integration add Integration rules for Renewal date, Subscription cycles count, Days since cancel, Has active subscription and Loyalty points.

IN THE APP
Where you set it up in Atomato
Customer Segments and Target visitors based on sit on the Setup tab of each campaign. NotiPop timing is under Display rules.
WHEN IT SHOWS
Timing and triggers for NotiPop and cart rules
A NotiPop appears on a timer, on scroll or after inactivity, and cart and Exit Intent rules can bring a message in as soon as they match.
-
Delay
Appear after Delay shows the NotiPop 2 to 60 seconds after the page loads. The default is 2.
NotiPopSet up a NotiPop -
Scrolled
Shows the NotiPop once the shopper scrolls 10%, 25%, 33%, 50%, 75% or 100% of the page.
NotiPopChoose NotiPop timing -
Inactivity
Shows the NotiPop after 5 to 60 seconds with no mouse movement, clicks, key presses, taps or scrolling.
NotiPopChoose NotiPop timing -
Hide after
Display duration keeps the NotiPop on screen for 4 to 120 seconds, or choose ∞ to keep it until the shopper closes it. The default is 8.
NotiPopSet up a NotiPop -
Exit Intent
A rule under Target visitors based on. It fires once per message on each page view, when the mouse pointer leaves through the top of the browser window, so it doesn't fire on phones. A NotiPop waiting on it skips Appear after, and shows only if that browser hasn't seen it yet.
NotiFeed, NotiPop, NotiSellIf it doesn't trigger -
Cart activity
Cart value, Cart items and Cart products rules are checked when a page loads and again when your theme updates the cart without a reload. With some themes, a cart change only counts from the next page load. A NotiPop appears as soon as the cart matches, skipping Appear after, if that browser hasn't seen it yet. NotiFeed and NotiSell messages are added to the feed above other messages of their type. A message leaves again if the cart stops matching.

FAQ
Questions about targeting
Short answers on plans, signed-in shoppers, rule syntax and devices.
Is targeting included on the Starter plan?
Yes. Customer Segments and every rule under Target visitors based on work on Starter, along with the NotiPop Display rules. Starter includes 1 NotiFeed and 1 NotiPop campaign, and each shows only its first message. Scale adds NotiSell, Multi notifications and the Schedule tab. Enterprise+ adds NotiEmail and SKIO Integration rules. See pricing.
Do customer segments work for shoppers who aren't signed in?
No. Specific customer segments and Specific customers only match shoppers signed in to a customer account, so guests see messages set to All customers or Visitors (not signed in). Atomato asks Shopify about membership and keeps the answer for up to 3 minutes. If you pick Specific customer segments or Specific customers and leave the list empty, the message shows to every shopper. See Show a campaign to specific customers or segments.
What should I type in a Page URL rule?
Type the path after your domain, such as /collections/, not the full address. Page URL ignores capital letters and anything after a question mark, and Contains also covers language folders such as /fr/products/. See Show a campaign on certain pages, devices or carts.
How do UTM rules match?
Write the rule as a parameter and value, such as utm_source=instagram. Atomato compares it with the address of the page the shopper is on, so it matches on the page they land on from your link, and capital letters count.
Can I put a cart or Exit Intent rule on a NotiEmail signup?
A NotiEmail signup waiting on a cart or Exit Intent rule doesn't show. Use Page URL, UTM or Device rules for signups. See Why isn't my cart or exit-intent campaign triggering?
How does Atomato decide between Desktop and Mobile?
Mobile means a browser window 740 pixels wide or less when the page loads, and Desktop is anything wider. Exit Intent watches for the mouse pointer leaving through the top of the window, so it doesn't fire on phones.
