Choose the right time to show a NotiPop

How each NotiPop trigger behaves, which to use for which message, and how the sticky tab lets shoppers reopen it.

Time a NotiPop to what the message asks: a Delay for news every shopper should see, Scrolled once they are reading, Inactivity when they pause, and an Exit Intent or cart rule for shoppers about to leave or with a certain cart. Plan on one showing per shopper, since a seen NotiPop doesn't come back on later pages.

Match the trigger to the message

You pick the trigger in Appear after under Display rules, covered in Set up a NotiPop and choose when it appears.

  • Delay suits notices every shopper should see early, such as the Shipping Update or Sitewide Promo templates. It restarts on every page, so a long delay only reaches shoppers who stay on one page that long.
  • Scrolled waits until the shopper is reading, which suits social proof such as Community Milestone on long pages. It never appears on a page too short to scroll.
  • Inactivity waits for a pause with no mouse movement, clicks, typing, tapping or scrolling. Use it for a short "still deciding?" note, such as your returns policy.

Keep each NotiPop to one job, as in Zibra's case study: "NotiPop is the only timed module. It fires once, late in the visit, and carries a single add-on rather than a general offer."

Use exit intent and cart rules

Exit Intent is a rule under Target visitors based on, not an Appear after option. The NotiPop shows when the mouse pointer leaves through the top of the window, so it doesn't fire on phones. Use it for one last reason to stay. See Show a campaign on certain pages, devices or carts.

Exit intent: the pointer leaves the top of the page on desktop.

Cart rules show a NotiPop when the shopper's cart matches, which suits reminders and thresholds such as free shipping. Either kind of rule skips Appear after, but Hide after still applies. For recipes, see Show messages based on what is in a shopper's cart.

Decide how long it stays

Hide after is the shopper's reading time. A one-line notice can go quickly, while a NotiPop with a button or longer text needs more. Hovering pauses the countdown.

Choose ∞ for notices shoppers must not miss, such as a shipping delay. It stays until the shopper closes it, and shows again on each new page until they close, hover over, tap or click it.

What happens after a shopper sees it

Closing, clicking, hovering over, tapping or swiping a NotiPop, or letting it hide on its own, marks it as seen in that browser.

With Sticky alert tab, the default Display behavior, shoppers can reopen your NotiPops from a small bell tab, including ones whose trigger hasn't fired yet, but not ones with a cart or Exit Intent rule. With Hide it completely, a closed NotiPop can't be reopened.

Editing a NotiPop doesn't reset it for shoppers who saw it, so put new wording in a new NotiPop.

Run more than one NotiPop

On Scale and Enterprise+, a campaign can hold several NotiPops, each with its own trigger, timing and audience. Keep a campaign to one idea. Each Delay counts from when the previous NotiPop appeared, not from when it closed, so they can stack up. To show them one at a time, give each later NotiPop a Delay longer than the Hide after of the one before. Hovering can still make them overlap.

Check which timing works

On Scale and Enterprise+, open Analytics and the Notipop tab. In Performance by message, the Trigger column shows each NotiPop's trigger, or Multiple when it also has a cart or Exit Intent rule.

Change one thing at a time, such as the trigger or Hide after, and compare Clicks and Orders over similar periods. Zibra's case study is careful with small numbers: "NotiPop earned $408.69 from 33 clicks, so that per-click figure rests on a small sample and is not a forecast."
