Show a campaign on certain pages, devices or carts
Use page, UTM, cart, device and exit intent rules to decide where and when a message shows.
Targeting rules show a campaign message only on the pages, devices or carts you choose, to shoppers arriving from a UTM link, or when a shopper is about to leave. They work on every plan, for NotiFeed, NotiPop, NotiSell and NotiEmail campaigns.
Turn on targeting rules
- On the Setup tab, select the message if the campaign has more than one, as each message has its own rules. For NotiEmail, use the Feed step.
- Switch on Target visitors based on.
- Next to Conditions must match:, choose all conditions (every rule must match) or any condition (one is enough).
- Click Add rule and pick the rule type, the condition and the value. Don't leave a rule empty, as that can hide the message. The bin icon removes a rule.
- Click Save campaign.
Switching Target visitors based on off deletes the rules. If you also set Customer Segments, a shopper has to be in that group and match the rules. See Show a campaign to specific customers or segments.
Rule types
-
Page URL: Is equal to, Is not equal to, Contains or Does not contain a path such as
/collections/. -
UTM: the same four conditions, with a value such as
utm_source=instagram. - Cart value: Is greater than, Is greater than or equal to, Is lower than, Is lower than or equal to or Is equal to an amount.
- Cart items: the same five conditions, for the total quantity in the cart.
- Cart products: Includes any or Does not include any of the products you pick in Search products. One rule of each.
- Device: Is Desktop or Mobile. One per message.
- Exit Intent: nothing to fill in. One per message.
How page and UTM rules match
Page URL checks the path after your domain, ignoring capital letters and anything after a question mark. Type the path, not the full address. Contains covers a group of pages, such as /products/, including language folders like /fr/products/.
UTM checks the current page's address, and capital letters count. It matches only on the page shoppers land on from your link, as Atomato doesn't carry the parameter over to later pages.
How cart, device and exit rules behave
Cart rules are checked when a page loads and whenever the cart changes. The message appears as soon as the cart matches and goes away if it stops matching. With some themes, a cart change only counts from the next page load. Cart value compares your amount with the cart total in the shopper's currency, without converting it.
When a message waits on a cart or Exit Intent rule:
- A NotiPop shows as soon as the rule matches, skipping its Appear after wait.
- A NotiFeed or NotiSell message joins the top of the feed, which doesn't open by itself.
- A NotiEmail signup never shows, so use Page URL, UTM or Device rules for signups.
Mobile means a browser window 740 pixels wide or less when the page loads, and Desktop anything wider. Exit Intent fires once per page view, when the mouse pointer leaves through the top of the window, so it doesn't fire on phones.
Examples
- Free shipping nudge: a NotiPop with Cart value Is lower than your free shipping threshold. It goes away once the cart reaches it. To skip empty carts, add Cart items Is greater than 0 with all conditions. See Set up a NotiPop and choose when it appears.
- Cart reminder: the Abandoned Cart Prompt template has no rule and shows to every shopper. Add Cart items Is greater than 0 so it only shows when the cart isn't empty.
Test your rules
- The Store preview ignores the rules of the campaign you are editing, so use it for the look only. See Preview a campaign before it goes live.
- Test on your live store in a private window. A NotiPop that has been seen or closed doesn't show again in that browser.
- For a UTM rule, add the parameter to a page address, such as
?utm_source=instagram.
