Show a campaign to specific customers or segments

Show a message only to signed-in customers, signed-out shoppers, Shopify customer segments or customers you pick.

Switch on Customer Segments on a message's Setup tab to show it only to signed-in customers, to shoppers who aren't signed in, to Shopify customer segments or to customers you pick. It's included on every plan.

Where to find it

Open a NotiFeed, NotiPop, NotiSell or NotiEmail campaign and go to the Setup tab. Customer Segments sits near the end of the tab, just above Target visitors based on. In a NotiEmail campaign, it's in the Feed step.

In a NotiFeed or NotiPop campaign with several messages under Multi notifications, each message has its own setting, so select the message first.

Choose a customer group

  • All customers: every shopper, the same as leaving the switch off.
  • Visitors (not signed in): only shoppers who aren't signed in to a customer account.
  • Customers (signed in): any shopper signed in to a customer account on your store.
  • Specific customer segments: signed-in customers who belong to any of the Shopify segments you pick.
  • Specific customers: only the customers you pick, while they are signed in.

These groups are about signing in, not order history. A returning customer who browses without signing in counts as a visitor. To reach customers by what they have bought or spent, use a segment.

Who sees a campaign: a customer group, plus page, UTM, cart, device or exit intent rules.

Use Shopify customer segments

  1. Build the segment in Shopify first, under Customers > Segments.
  2. In Atomato, choose Specific customer segments.
  3. Click Search customer segments to see your segments, or type at least two characters of a name to search.
  4. Select one or more segments. They appear in a list below the search field.

A signed-in shopper who is in any of the selected segments sees the message. Atomato asks Shopify whether they are a member and remembers the answer for a few minutes, so someone who has just joined a segment may not see the message straight away.

Your list may include segments whose names start with Atomato -. Atomato adds these to your store for its templates, and you can use them like any other segment.

Customer Segments set to two Shopify segments. Only shoppers in them see the campaign.

Pick specific customers

Choose Specific customers and click Search customers to see a list of customers, or type at least two characters of a name to search. Select one or more from the results. To remove a customer or a segment, click the X next to it.

Things to know

  • If you choose Specific customer segments or Specific customers and leave the list empty, the message shows to every shopper.
  • Segments and specific customers only match shoppers who are signed in. Shoppers who aren't signed in see only messages set to All customers or Visitors (not signed in).
  • For NotiSell product recommendations, the choices are All customers, Specific customer segments and Specific customers.
  • The Member-Only Offer template comes with the segment Atomato - Customers who have the tag 'VIP' already chosen, which Atomato sets up to include customers tagged VIP. If that segment is missing from your store, for example because it was deleted, the template opens with Customer Segments off and the offer would show to every shopper. Check the switch before you click Save campaign.

Check who sees it

The store preview always shows the message you are editing, whatever group you choose, so it can't tell you who will see it. See Preview a campaign before it goes live.

Once the campaign is Active, open your store signed in with a customer account that should see the message, then again signed out. After you change a message's segments, or who is in a segment, allow a few minutes.

The bell in a store's header, with the feed open.

Combine with page and cart rules

A message shows only when the shopper is in its customer group and its Target visitors based on rules also match. For example, pick a VIP segment and add a Page URL rule to show an offer to VIP customers on one collection page only. Learn how to target campaigns by page, device or cart.
