Show messages based on what is in a shopper's cart
Recipes for free shipping thresholds, cart reminders and add-ons that react as the cart changes.
Cart rules show a NotiFeed, NotiPop or NotiSell message only while the cart matches, for example while it is under your free shipping threshold, and remove it once the cart stops matching.
The cart rules you can use
On the Setup tab, switch on Target visitors based on and click Add rule. Cart value compares the cart total with an amount, Cart items counts the items, and Cart products checks for products you pick. Exit Intent fires when the mouse pointer leaves through the top of the browser window, so it doesn't work on phones. Every option is covered in Show a campaign on certain pages, devices or carts.
Messages follow the cart as it changes
Atomato checks the cart when a page loads and each time your theme adds to or changes it, then shows or removes the message.
- A NotiFeed or NotiSell message waits in the feed, which doesn't open by itself.
- A NotiPop shows straight away, without waiting for its Appear after setting. Once a shopper has closed, clicked, hovered over or touched it, or it has hidden itself after its Hide after time, it doesn't show again in that browser.
Leave cart and Exit Intent rules off NotiEmail and NotiSMS signups. The editor offers them, but a signup that waits on one doesn't show.
Recipe: free shipping threshold
- Write a NotiFeed or NotiPop message such as "Add a little more for free shipping".
- Add Cart value Is lower than your threshold and Cart items Is greater than 0, with all conditions, so empty carts don't see it.
- On Scale or Enterprise+, click Add more for a second message, such as "Your order ships free", with Cart value Is greater than or equal to the same threshold.
As the cart crosses the threshold, the first message leaves and the second appears. On the Free plan a campaign shows only its first message, so the reminder simply goes away.
A NotiPop reminder may hide itself for good before the cart qualifies, so make each message make sense on its own. Amounts are compared with the cart total in the shopper's currency, without conversion, so check each currency you sell in.
Recipe: cart reminder
Start from the Abandoned Cart Prompt NotiPop template, "Still Thinking It Over?", with a View Cart button. It has no rules, so it shows to every shopper, even with an empty cart.
- Add Cart items Is greater than 0.
- To wait until the shopper moves to leave, also add Exit Intent with all conditions. Shoppers on phones then won't see it.
- It hides itself after 8 seconds and then won't come back in that browser, so raise Hide after to keep it up longer.
With only the cart rule, the reminder also shows right after a shopper's first add to cart, not just on a return visit.
Recipe: an add-on for what is in the cart
Add Cart products Includes any with the main product and Cart products Does not include any with the add-on, under all conditions, so the message goes away once the add-on is in the cart. In a NotiFeed or NotiPop message, point the Call to action button at the add-on's product page. In the Zibra case study, "the best-performing pop is a Speed Drop add-on." The study has no control group, so it claims no lift.
On Scale or Enterprise+, a NotiSell message lets shoppers add the item from the feed. See Increase average order value with product recommendations.
Test cart messages before you rely on them
The Store preview always shows the campaign you are editing, whatever its rules, so it checks the look, not the timing. See Preview a campaign before it goes live. To test the rules:
- Save the campaign as Active.
- Open your store in a new private window, since a NotiPop you have already seen won't show again.
- Add and remove items and watch the message change. For a feed message, open the bell.
If it only changes after a page reload, Atomato may not be picking up your theme's cart updates. Get help from the Atomato team and tell us which theme you use.
