Show different messages to new, returning and VIP customers
Targeting recipes for VIPs, lapsed customers, big spenders, signed-out shoppers and traffic from an ad or email.
Give each message its own group under Customer Segments, starting from the five Shopify customer segments Atomato adds to your store. Segments only reach signed-in shoppers, so pair each segment message with a general one.
Who you can show a message to
Each message has two audience settings on the Setup tab, on every plan, and shows only to shoppers who match both. Customer Segments decides which customers see it, and Target visitors based on adds page, UTM, cart, device or exit intent rules.
Segments Atomato adds to your store
When you install Atomato, it adds these segments to Shopify. Pick them under Specific customer segments:
- Atomato - Customers who have the tag 'VIP': customers you have tagged VIP in Shopify.
- Atomato - Re-Engagement: last order more than 60 days ago.
- Atomato - last order a month ago: last order more than a month ago.
- Atomato - Customers who have spent more than $100: total spend above 100.
- Atomato - New customers: customers with no orders yet.
Change their conditions, or build your own such as repeat buyers, in Shopify under Customers > Segments. Keep the Atomato names, because Atomato looks these segments up by name.
Segments only reach signed-in shoppers
Atomato knows who a shopper is only when they are signed in. Messages set to a segment, Customers (signed in) or Specific customers show only to signed-in shoppers who match. Shoppers who aren't signed in, returning customers included, see only messages set to All customers or Visitors (not signed in).
So pair each segment message with a general one. On Scale and Enterprise+, one campaign can hold both, because each message has its own customer group. On Free, a campaign shows only its first message, so use a NotiFeed for one and a NotiPop for the other.
Recipes for common audiences
VIP early access
Tag your best customers VIP in Shopify, then start from the Member-Only Offer template under Promote a sale or launch. It comes set to Atomato - Customers who have the tag 'VIP'. Set its Button link to the new collection. If that segment was renamed or deleted, the template opens with Customer Segments off and the offer would show to everyone, so check it before you save.
Win back lapsed customers
Set a message to Atomato - Re-Engagement or Atomato - last order a month ago and lead with what is new since their last order. Shoppers clicking through from a win-back email may not be signed in, so give that email's link a UTM message of its own.
Bigger baskets from big spenders
Set the Spend More, Get More template to Atomato - Customers who have spent more than $100. Its title and the code 100BACK are only a sample: create your discount in Shopify, then put your own amount and code in the title.
New and signed-out shoppers
Set a signup, such as the First Order Discount NotiEmail template (Enterprise+), to Visitors (not signed in) so signed-in customers don't see it. A signup that waits on a cart or Exit Intent rule never shows, so target signups by page, UTM or device instead. For signed-in customers who haven't ordered yet, use Atomato - New customers.
Match messages to ad and email traffic
A UTM rule shows a message to shoppers whose link carries your ad or email tag. Use the full parameter name from your link, such as utm_source=instagram, not the utm=referral shown in the empty field, and match its capital letters.
The rule matches only on the page the link opens, so send the ad to the page where the message matters and repeat the ad's offer there.
Check who sees it
The store preview shows the campaign you are editing whatever its audience, so use it for the look only. Once the campaign is Active, open your store in a private window, first signed out, then signed in as a customer in the segment. Allow a few minutes after you tag a customer or change a message's segments. For a UTM message, add the tag to the landing page's address.
