Why isn't my cart or exit-intent campaign triggering?
How cart and exit-intent rules are checked in the browser, why one might not fire, and how to test it on your store.
Cart value, Cart items, Cart products and Exit Intent rules are checked in the shopper's browser, so the message appears only once the cart matches or the mouse pointer leaves the top of the window. If it never fires, check the message's other rules, the device you test on, and whether that browser has already seen it.
When Atomato checks cart rules
Atomato checks cart rules in the shopper's browser:
- When a page loads, Atomato reads the cart and checks the rules.
- It checks again when your theme updates the cart without reloading the page.
- If the cart stops matching, the message is taken away.
Rules belong to each message, so check Target visitors based on for every message in the campaign. On the Free plan, only a campaign's first message shows, so rules on later messages never run. To set rules up, see Show a campaign on certain pages, devices or carts.
Cart value, cart items and cart products rules
- Cart value compares the cart total with your amount. It isn't converted, so a rule of 50 means 50 in the shopper's currency. Test each currency you sell in.
- Cart items compares the number of items in the cart, counting quantities.
- Cart products uses Includes any or Does not include any, with one rule of each per message.
- A cart rule with no amount, number or products filled in never matches.
With Is lower than, a free shipping NotiPop shows while the cart is under your amount and goes away once the shopper passes it. An empty cart counts as 0 and matches too. To skip empty carts, add Cart items Is greater than 0 with all conditions.
Exit-intent rules
Exit Intent fires when the mouse pointer leaves through the top edge of the browser window. Leaving through the sides or bottom doesn't count, and phones and most tablets have no pointer, so it won't fire there. It fires once per message on each page view.
Combining rules with all or any
- With all conditions, a Page URL, UTM or Device rule that doesn't match stops the message, even when the cart matches. UTM rules only read the current page's address, so an Is equal to or Contains UTM rule fails on pages without the UTM.
- With any condition, a matching Page URL, UTM or Device rule shows the message straight away, without waiting for the cart or exit intent.
- Device goes by window width when the page loads: 740 pixels or narrower counts as Mobile, even on a computer.
Customer Segments are checked before any rule, so shoppers outside the chosen audience never get the message.
What shoppers see when a rule matches
- NotiPop appears straight away, ignoring Appear after. Once the shopper hovers over it, touches it or closes it, or it hides after Hide after, it doesn't show again in that browser. See Why isn't my NotiPop showing, or why does it only show once?
- NotiFeed and NotiSell join the feed and raise the number on the bell if the shopper hasn't seen them yet. The feed doesn't open on its own.
- NotiEmail and NotiSMS signups don't currently appear when their rules wait on the cart or exit intent, and the VIP List Signup template starts with a Cart value rule. For signups, use Page URL, UTM or Device rules only.
Test a cart or exit rule
Preview on desktop and Preview on mobile skip the rules, so test on your live store.
- Check the campaign is Active, and open your store in a private window.
- Add products until you cross your amount or item count, and watch for the NotiPop or the number on the bell.
- For exit intent, use a computer and move the pointer out through the top of the window.
- If the message only appears after a reload, your theme updates the cart in a way Atomato picks up on the next page.
