How to test Atomato on your store like a new shopper

Atomato remembers what each browser has seen. Here is how to test campaigns the way a first-time shopper sees them.

Atomato remembers what each browser has already seen, so your store looks different on your second visit. To see campaigns as a first-time shopper does, test in a fresh private window, as the right kind of customer, at the screen width you're targeting.

Why the second visit looks different

Atomato saves a few things in the shopper's browser:

  • Seen feed messages. A message counts as seen once it's hovered over or touched, and the number on the bell drops.
  • Seen NotiPops. A NotiPop that was hovered over, clicked, closed or hidden on its timer doesn't show again in that browser.
  • Finished signups. A completed NotiEmail signup that gives a discount code reopens on its success step with the same code for 30 days.

Other shoppers still see everything fresh in their own browsers.

Atomato remembers what a browser has seen. Use a private window to see it as a new shopper.

Start fresh with a private window

Open your store in a private or incognito window. It starts with nothing saved, so the bell shows its full count and every NotiPop and signup starts from the beginning.

To test again, close every private window and open a new one. Clearing your store's site data in your browser also works.

Test signed-in and signed-out shoppers

Atomato checks whether you're signed in to a customer account on your storefront, not to your Shopify admin. Under Customer Segments:

  • Campaigns for Visitors (not signed in) disappear once you sign in to a customer account.
  • Campaigns for Customers (signed in), Specific customer segments or Specific customers only show when you're signed in as a matching customer. Use a test customer account that belongs to the segment or is on the list. Segment changes can take a few minutes to apply.

Test desktop and mobile

When a page loads, Atomato treats a browser window wider than 740 pixels as desktop, and 740 pixels or narrower as mobile. Device rules use this. On desktop, NotiPops appear at the top right or top left. On phones, they show at the bottom.

The bell and feed adjust as you resize the window, but Device rules only change on reload. So reload after resizing, or check on a real phone.

Atomato picks the layout from the window width when the page loads, so resize, then reload.

Test page, UTM, cart and exit intent rules

If the campaign has rules under Target visitors based on, recreate each one:

  • Page URL: visit a page whose path matches the rule, such as /collections/sale.
  • UTM: add the rule's parameter to the page address, for example ?utm_source=instagram, and reload. Capital letters count. Atomato checks each page's address, so the message only shows while the parameter is still there.
  • Cart value, Cart items and Cart products: add products until the cart matches the rule, then watch for the NotiPop or a new number on the bell. If nothing appears, reload the page.
  • Exit Intent: use a desktop browser and move the pointer out through the top of the window. Phones have no pointer, so it doesn't fire there.
A UTM rule matches the address the shopper arrived on. To test it, open your store with the same parameter.

NotiSell keeps product details in the browser tab for 5 minutes. After changing a product, wait that long or open a new private window.

What testing does to your analytics and lists

  • Nothing is recorded while you view your store inside Shopify's theme editor or the in-app preview.
  • On your live store, your views and clicks count in Atomato's analytics like any shopper's. On the Free plan, hovers and dismissals aren't recorded.
  • Test signups go to your connected email or SMS platform like real ones. Use a new address each round, because one that already signed up through the campaign can jump straight to the success step. Remove test addresses from the platform afterwards.
  • If you click a message and then place a test order in the same browser, the items can count as Atomato revenue.

The in-app preview, described in Preview a campaign before it goes live, shows the campaign you're editing on your home page as a signed-out shopper would see it, whatever its rules. So check page, UTM, cart and customer rules on your live store once the campaign is active.
