A Shopify CRO checklist: what to check from search to checkout
A Shopify CRO checklist that uses built-in reports and settings to find where shoppers drop out, fix it and measure the result.

Shopify CRO (conversion rate optimization) means finding where shoppers drop out between landing on your store and paying, then fixing those spots one at a time. Start with your own numbers, not someone else's tips. Most of what you need is already in your Shopify admin.
This checklist walks through those areas in the order a shopper meets them. By the end you will know which step of your funnel loses the most sessions, which built-in settings to change first, and how to tell whether a change helped. It uses Shopify's own features only.
Start with the funnel in Shopify Analytics
Before changing anything, find the step that leaks. In your Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports, click the Category filter and choose Behavior. Open the Conversion rate breakdown report. It shows a funnel with four steps: all sessions, sessions with cart additions, sessions that reached checkout and sessions that completed checkout. Each step's rate is that step's sessions divided by total sessions.
Read the drop between each pair of steps:
- Sessions to cart additions: a weak first step points at product discovery and the product page.
- Cart additions to checkout: a weak middle step points at the cart, surprise costs or missing reassurance.
- Checkout to completed: a weak last step points at checkout settings, payment options and delivery costs.
Two things to keep in mind. Use the Conversion rate over time report to watch a change after you make it. And Shopify notes that a session measurement update rolled out from September 21 to 23, 2026, so sessions and conversion rate may look different from that date without any real change in shopper behavior. Compare periods on the same side of that date where you can.
Fix search before you touch design
Shoppers who search usually know what they want, so a search that returns nothing is a lost sale you can see. The same Behavior category has Searches with no results and Searches with no clicks. Both list the terms shoppers typed. Shopify notes these search reports can lag by up to 72 hours.
- For no-result terms, add the words shoppers use to your product titles, descriptions, product types or tags. Shopify's search uses that product information to match related terms.
- For terms with results but no clicks, check what comes up first. In Apps > Search & Discovery, click Search, then Product boosts, and assign up to 10 search terms to the product that should rank higher. Shopify's guidance is to boost one product, or a small number, per term.
- In the Search & Discovery settings, choose whether out-of-stock products are shown, hidden or placed last in results. By default they come last. Your published theme can override these settings.
Collection filters live in the same app. If your filters feel thin or confusing, our collection page best practices cover setting them up.
Make the product page answer the buying questions
If the first step of your funnel is weak, the product page is usually the place to work. Our product page best practices checklist goes through media, variants, copy and metafields in detail.
One quick check here: accelerated checkout buttons. Shopify shows them with the Add to cart button on product pages, and you can display or hide them. The branded buttons a shopper sees, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay or Google Pay, depend on the payment methods you have activated, plus the shopper's browser, device and payment history. If no third-party method is active, only the unbranded Buy it now button shows. Shopify's accelerated checkout docs list the details.
Choose a cart style that fits how people buy
In the theme editor, open Theme settings and then Cart. In themes with this setting, Cart type offers Drawer, Page or Popup notification. A drawer or popup notification keeps the shopper on the product page after adding to cart; the page option takes them to the cart page.
- If shoppers usually buy several items, a drawer lets them keep browsing.
- If most orders are one item, test whether a cart page or popup notification moves shoppers to checkout faster than a drawer.
Whatever you pick, make shipping costs visible before checkout. In Baymard Institute's cart abandonment research (list last updated September 22, 2025), "Extra costs too high (shipping, tax, fees)" is the top reason, given by 40% of shoppers in the survey once the "just browsing" group is set aside. In Shopify's free themes, your shipping policy is linked on product pages and in the cart once you add it in Settings > Policies, so make sure that policy states your real rates and thresholds.
Remove friction from checkout settings
Shopify Checkout handles most of the work, but a few settings in Settings > Checkout can add steps you don't need. The checkout form options page explains each one.
- Sign-in before checkout: check whether Require customers to sign in to their account before checkout is turned on. If it is, Shopify hides accelerated checkout options such as Apple Pay in the online store cart. In the same Baymard list, 18% of shoppers gave "The site wanted me to create an account" as a reason. Leave it off unless your business needs it.
- Company name: if you don't sell to businesses, set it to Don't include.
- Address line 2: keep it Optional. Shopify warns that Required or Don't include can stop some customers from completing a purchase, depending on their type of residence.
- Shipping address phone number: Optional is the default on new stores. Set it to Required only when your payment provider or carrier needs it.
After any change, place a test order through Shopify's test payment gateway, or Shopify Payments test mode if you use it, to confirm the checkout still works end to end. Testing a payment gateway needs a paid Shopify plan. Shopify notes that customers can't place live orders while your payment providers are in test mode, so turn it off when you're done.
Build trust where shoppers look for it
Shoppers check returns, shipping and contact details before they pay, and in the same Baymard list 19% of shoppers said "I didn't trust the site with my credit card information". In Settings > Policies, add your return policy, shipping policy, privacy policy, terms of service and contact information. If Shopify generates any of them from your store settings, review the text yourself.
Shopify links your policies in the checkout footer automatically. Add them to your store menus too, from Content > Menus, so shoppers can find them on any page before they reach checkout.
Keep pages fast
Slow pages hurt every step of the funnel. Shopify's Behavior reports include web performance reports based on Core Web Vitals, which measure loading speed, interactivity and visual stability. If those show problems, our store speed guide covers how to find the slow pages and what usually causes them.
A worked example: socks store, before and after
Say you sell running socks. Your Conversion rate breakdown for the last 30 days shows, as example numbers only, 10,000 sessions, 900 with cart additions, 600 that reached checkout and 180 that completed checkout. The big drop is between reaching checkout and completing it: 420 of 600 sessions stop there.
Before: sign-in is required before checkout, Address line 2 is set to Required, and the shipping policy page says "rates calculated at checkout".
After: you turn off the sign-in requirement so accelerated checkout shows in the cart again, set Address line 2 to Optional, and rewrite the shipping policy with your actual rates and your free shipping threshold. You place a test order, then watch Conversion rate over time for the next four weeks against the four weeks before. All three target the same funnel step, so treat them as one change, and change nothing else in that window.
Where on-site messages fit
Some conversion problems are information problems: shoppers don't know about the free shipping threshold, the delivery cutoff or the restock. Atomato adds a bell and notification feed to your store where you can post that news, and lets you show campaigns on certain pages, devices or cart values. The free Starter plan runs one active NotiFeed and one active NotiPop campaign, with one message each. For context on how shoppers respond, our on-site messaging benchmarks show a 5.46% click rate across 4,414,979 message views and 241,142 clicks on 25 stores, 11 April to 8 October 2026, with test stores left out. It works alongside the popup, email and SMS tools you already run.
Common mistakes, and what this won't fix
- Changing five things at once. You won't know which one worked. Change one area, wait, compare.
- Comparing against another store's conversion rate. Price point, traffic source and product type all change what is normal. Compare your store with its own past.
- Expecting settings to fix the offer. If the price, product or traffic doesn't match what shoppers want, a smoother checkout won't make up for it. CRO removes friction; it doesn't create demand.
The Shopify CRO checklist
- Open Conversion rate breakdown and note the weakest step.
- Check Searches with no results and Searches with no clicks; fix product text and add product boosts.
- Review product pages: media, variants, price and delivery information.
- Confirm accelerated checkout buttons show and the right payment methods are active.
- Pick a cart type that matches how your shoppers buy.
- State real shipping costs and thresholds in your shipping policy.
- In Settings > Checkout, review sign-in, company name, address line 2 and phone fields.
- Add every store policy and link them in your menus.
- Check the web performance reports.
- Place a test order after any checkout change.
- Track Conversion rate over time for a few weeks after each change.
Common questions
What is a good conversion rate for a Shopify store?
There isn't one number that applies to every store. Price, product type and where your traffic comes from all shift it. The most useful benchmark is your own store over time, read in Shopify's Conversion rate over time report.
How long should I wait before judging a change?
Long enough for a steady number of sessions to pass through the step you changed. For many small stores that means a few weeks, not a few days. Compare equal periods.
Why did my conversion rate change in late September 2026?
Shopify rolled out a session measurement update from September 21 to 23, 2026, and says session-based metrics might look different afterwards, which doesn't necessarily mean your traffic or shopper behavior changed. Keep that in mind when comparing across those dates.
