Shopify continue selling when out of stock: a pre-Black Friday inventory audit

What Shopify's continue selling when out of stock setting does, when to leave it on, and how to audit every variant before Black Friday.

A small red moon on a deep blue night

Shopify's Continue selling when out of stock setting lets shoppers buy a variant after its tracked inventory reaches zero. That is useful for preorders and stock that is already on its way, and risky on Black Friday, when one forgotten checkbox can turn a sellout into a pile of orders you can't ship.

The setting is off by default, but it lives on every variant, so on a store with a few hundred variants it is easy to lose track of which ones allow overselling.

This guide shows you how to find every variant that can oversell, decide which ones should, hold back a small buffer, and check the location rules that decide what shoppers can buy online.

What continue selling when out of stock actually does

Shopify counts a variant as out of stock when its inventory is tracked and its level is zero or below. By default, shoppers can't buy it. When you tick Continue selling when out of stock in the Inventory section of a product or variant, shoppers can keep ordering, and the inventory level goes negative. Shopify's help page on selling out of stock products lists the intended uses: preorders, stock that's arriving soon, selling first and ordering supplies later, and products whose actual quantity you don't track in Shopify.

Three details matter before a big sale:

  • It needs tracking. You can only select the option when inventory tracking is on for that variant.
  • It doesn't apply to Shopify POS. Staff can sell at zero or below in person, and POS warns them first.
  • Location still counts. If the location that fulfills online orders is at zero or below, the product shows as out of stock online, even when another location that doesn't fulfill online orders has stock.

When to leave it on, and when to switch it off

Leave it on only for:

  • Preorders for a product with a confirmed delivery date, with the ship date stated on the product page.
  • Made to order items, where you buy materials after the order comes in.
  • Stock in transit that will land before you would normally ship.

Switch it off for everything else during the sale. That includes limited editions, holiday gift sets, last season's colors you won't reorder, and anything a supplier can't refill before your shipping cutoff. For these, a sold-out product page is a better outcome than an order you have to cancel and refund.

Audit every variant from the Inventory page

Shopify's guide to managing increased sales recommends making sure products in the Continue selling when out of stock column are unchecked before an order surge. Here is how to see that column:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products > Inventory.
  2. Select all products. If you have more than 50, click Select all inventory in this store.
  3. Click Bulk edit > Columns > Continue selling when out of stock to add that column to the bulk editor.
  4. Untick every variant that shouldn't oversell, keep the ones on your preorder or made to order list, and save.

For a written record, export your catalog. Go to Products, click Export, choose all products and click Export products. Exports of all products are emailed to you. In the file, the Continue selling when out of stock column reads deny (the default, no purchases after zero) or continue (purchases allowed after zero). Filter for continue and you have your full overselling list in one view. An import with Overwrite products with matching handles selected also overwrites this column when the file includes it, so run the check again after any bulk import.

Check the location that sells online

If you hold stock in more than one place, check where the units actually are. Online availability depends on the stock at the location that fulfills online orders. A product can look well stocked in your total count and still be out of stock online, because the units sit in a retail store or a location that doesn't ship. Move or transfer stock before the sale, not during it.

Also look at Committed stock on the Inventory page. Shopify's inventory states page defines committed units as set aside and not for sale, for example units in unfulfilled orders and draft order reservations. A large committed number the day before Black Friday is a sign that your sellable stock is lower than it looks.

Hold back a buffer with safety stock

If your store uses unavailable inventory states, you can hold back a few units of your bestsellers as safety stock. Shopify treats unavailable units as held at the location but not for sale, so they come out of what shoppers can buy.

  1. Go to Products > Inventory and click the product's quantity in the Available or On hand column.
  2. Open the Set to menu and choose Adjust by.
  3. Enter the number of units, choose your store location as the origin and Safety stock as the destination.
  4. Optionally click Add reason, click the check icon, review the pending change, then click Save.

After the sale, move the units back from safety stock to available the same way, once you've counted them.

A worked example: a candle store before Black Friday

Say you sell candles in three scents, plus a holiday gift set made with the free Shopify Bundles app. These numbers are an example only.

Before the audit: the export shows continue on all three scents, left over from a preorder in the spring. The bestseller, Cedar, has 120 units on hand, but 15 are committed to unfulfilled orders and 30 sit at a pop-up location that doesn't fulfill online orders. Nothing stops Cedar from selling well past zero on Black Friday morning.

After the audit: Cedar and the second scent are switched to stop selling at zero. The 30 pop-up units are transferred to the warehouse that ships online orders, and 8 units go into safety stock. The third scent, which has a confirmed delivery on 2 December, stays on continue as a preorder, with the ship date in the product description. The gift set is checked too: Shopify's bundle eligibility rules leave a component's stock out of the bundle quantity calculation when that component is set to continue selling, so the set's quantity is now limited by Cedar and the second scent, while the preorder scent doesn't count toward it. The store owner accepts that only because the scent's delivery date is confirmed, and adds the ship date to the gift set's page too.

Pre-sale overselling checklist

  • Inventory tracking is on for every physical product you sell.
  • The Continue selling when out of stock column is unticked for every variant without a restock plan.
  • Variants left on continue have a ship date on the product page.
  • Stock for online orders sits at the location that fulfills online orders.
  • Committed units are checked, including stock reserved on draft orders.
  • Safety stock is set aside for your top sellers.
  • Bundle components are checked for the continue selling setting.
  • A fresh product export is saved as your pre-sale record.

Common mistakes, and what this won't fix

  • Treating it as a store-wide switch. The setting is per variant. Fixing the main product and missing two sizes still leaves those sizes able to oversell.
  • Forgetting in-person sales. The setting doesn't apply to Shopify POS, so a pop-up or retail team can sell units your online store was counting on. Brief staff, or move online stock to a location they don't sell from.
  • Not knowing who changed a count. On a product's page, click View adjustment history in the Inventory section. Shopify's adjustment history shows the last 180 days, with a Created by column for the staff member, app or sales channel that made each change.
  • Reading the wrong number in reports. The Inventory remaining per product report, including its Days of inventory remaining column, measures stock by On hand quantity instead of Available since 1 October 2026. On hand includes committed and unavailable units, so it can read higher than what you can still sell.

What this won't fix: wrong counts. Every check above trusts the numbers in Shopify. If your last physical count is months old, count your top sellers before the sale. If another sales channel or warehouse system feeds inventory into Shopify, confirm it updates in time on a busy day.

Keep in-feed recommendations off sold-out variants

If you run NotiSell, which needs the Scale plan ($49.99 a month) or Enterprise+, add it to your audit. NotiSell shows up to six products in your store's feed that shoppers can add to cart. It doesn't check stock before it lists a variant, and the product list doesn't refresh on its own. If Shopify refuses an add because a variant is sold out, the feed closes and nothing is added. Before the sale, open each NotiSell campaign and untick sold-out variants under Eligible products, or switch to the High inventory & low sale method, which ranks products that track inventory by units in stock, and refresh the list: remove a product, click Fetch products and save. Refreshing resets your order and variant edits, and a sold-out variant of a well-stocked product can still be listed. The help article NotiSell isn't showing products walks through the steps.

Common questions

Why is my out of stock product still selling on Shopify?

Usually because Continue selling when out of stock is ticked on that variant, or because inventory isn't tracked for it at all. In-person sales through Shopify POS also ignore the setting. Check the variant's Inventory section, then the column in the bulk editor.

Can I change continue selling for all products at once?

Yes. From Products > Inventory, select all products, add the column through Bulk edit > Columns, untick it where needed and save. You can also set the column to deny or continue in a product CSV and import it with Overwrite products with matching handles selected.

Is continue selling the same as taking preorders?

Not quite. It allows orders after zero, but tells shoppers nothing, so state the expected ship date on the product page.

Why does my product show as sold out when I have stock?

The stock is probably at a location that doesn't fulfill online orders. Shopify treats the product as out of stock online when the location that fulfills online orders is at zero or below.
