Shopify Live View on Black Friday: what to watch and which reports to open next
What each Shopify Live View number measures, which reports to open when one moves, and how to compare Black Friday 2026 with last year.

Shopify Live View is the real-time screen Shopify describes as especially useful during high traffic periods such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It shows who is on your store right now, how many sessions have carts or are checking out, and how today's sales, orders and top products are adding up. Used well, it tells you within minutes whether an email landed, a discount is working or a product is about to sell out.
Used badly, it becomes a scoreboard you stare at. This guide covers what each Live View number actually measures, which Shopify reports to open next when something looks off, and how to compare this year's Black Friday Cyber Monday with last year's now that Shopify has changed how it measures sessions.
What Shopify Live View shows
Live View is available if you sell through the online store channel. On desktop, go to Analytics > Live View in your Shopify admin. In the Shopify app, open Analytics from the menu and tap Live View. You can switch between a 2D map and a 3D globe, where blue dots are recent visitor sessions and purple dots are orders.
According to Shopify's Live View documentation, the metrics use three different time windows, so it helps to know which is which:
- Visitors right now: visitors active on your online store in the past 5 minutes. Active means they viewed a page or clicked a button.
- Total sales, total sessions, total orders, top locations and top products: counted from midnight in your store's time zone. Total sales and total orders include other sales channels as well as the online store.
- Customer behavior: sessions in the last 10 minutes, split into active carts, checking out (sessions that reached checkout and submitted contact information) and purchased.
So "visitors right now" and "customer behavior" tell you what is happening this minute, while the totals tell you how the day is going. Clicking a metric card's name opens the legacy version of the related report. The reports are where the real diagnosis happens.
Set it up before the sale starts
A few minutes of setup the week before means fewer surprises on the day.
- Check your store address. If your own store pin sits in the wrong place, Shopify suggests checking Settings > Store contact details, because Google Maps may not be able to verify the address.
- Decide who watches. Staff need analytics permissions to see reports and dashboards. Give access to whoever is on shift before the weekend, not during it.
- Use Streamer mode if you share your screen. On desktop, Streamer mode hides the metrics so you can show the map in a team call or on a wall screen without exposing sales figures. It isn't available on mobile.
- Build your dashboard. On the Analytics page, metric cards can be added, removed and rearranged. Put the cards you will check most (sales, orders, sessions, conversion rate, average order value) at the top, and set the comparison period you want before the sale, as described in Shopify's guide to using the overview dashboard.
- Write down your plan for each signal. Decide now what you will do if checkouts drop or a product sells out.
Which Shopify reports to open when a number moves
Live View tells you that something changed. These default reports, under Analytics > Reports, tell you why. Report names below are from Shopify's help pages for behavior reports and sales reports.
Lots of visitors, few orders
Open Conversion rate breakdown, which shows the path sessions take through your store and checkout as a funnel. If sessions reach the cart but not checkout, look at the cart: shipping surprises, a discount that isn't applying or a slow cart drawer. If they reach checkout and stop, test a checkout yourself on a phone. Then open Sessions by device to see which devices sessions come from, and Sessions by landing page to see where the traffic is arriving.
A promotion went out
Watch visitors right now and active carts in the minutes after an email or ad goes live. Later, open Total sales by referrer to see which sources brought sales, and Sales by discount codes to see the sales each code brought in. If a code shows few sales, check that it is live and that shoppers can find it.
Shoppers can't find what they want
If you use Shopify's storefront search, Searches with no results lists the terms that returned nothing. Shopify notes this report can be delayed by up to 72 hours, so check it the week before the sale and again after the weekend. Gaps can mean a renamed product, a missing synonym or a collection that isn't live yet.
A product is selling faster than expected
Top products in Live View is your early warning. The inventory reports include Inventory remaining per product, but it estimates days of stock from the last 28 days of sales, so on a sale weekend check actual stock levels on the product too.
Comparing Black Friday 2026 with last year
Shopify updated how it measures sessions, with a rollout from September 21 to 23, 2026. According to its note on the session measurement update, sessions are now based on continued customer activity instead of ending at midnight UTC, some sessions without a pageview are counted, and identified bot sessions are filtered out by default.
Shopify says sessions, conversion rate, add to cart rate, reached checkout rate and other session based metrics might change, that you should treat the update as a measurement change and use data from after it as your new baseline. Orders, sales and customer counts aren't affected. In practice:
- Compare Black Friday 2026 with Black Friday 2025 on orders, total sales and average order value.
- Treat sessions and conversion rate from after the update as a new baseline. Compare them with your own October and early November 2026 numbers, not with last year.
- Where a report has the Human or bot session filter, use the same setting on both periods you compare. Shopify notes this still doesn't make sessions from before and after the update directly comparable.
A worked example
Say you sell skincare and send your Black Friday email at 7 a.m. This is an illustrative example, not real store data.
Before: at 7:20, Live View shows a large jump in visitors right now and plenty of active carts, but the purchased count in customer behavior barely moves. The team waits an hour, assuming shoppers are browsing.
After: the person on shift opens Conversion rate breakdown at 7:20 and sees sessions reaching checkout but few completing. Sales by discount codes shows almost no sales from the email's code. A test order on a phone shows the code was set to a collection that doesn't include the hero product. The fix takes five minutes, and the purchased count starts moving by 7:40.
Your Black Friday Cyber Monday checklist
- Store address correct and staff analytics permissions set.
- Dashboard cards arranged and comparison period chosen.
- Year over year comparisons based on orders, sales and average order value.
- A check every 15 to 30 minutes after each email, ad or price change.
- Conversion rate breakdown and Sales by discount codes bookmarked, and Searches with no results checked the week before.
- Top products checked against real stock levels during the day.
- Every discount code tested on a phone before it goes out.
For the conversion side of the same weekend, the Shopify CRO checklist covers what to fix before traffic arrives, and our guide to setting up Black Friday discounts on Shopify covers the codes you will be tracking.
What Live View won't tell you
- Why shoppers left. It shows counts, not reasons. You still need the reports and a test order.
- An exact match with other tools. Shopify notes Live View can differ from Google Analytics because of its 5 minute window, bot filtering, blocked scripts or cookies, time zones and consent banners.
- Precise locations for every visitor. Visitors shown in Kansas usually mean Live View couldn't find a specific US location, often for bots, crawlers or VPN users.
- Profit. Total sales includes shipping and taxes and doesn't subtract what your products cost. A record day with a deep discount can still be a weak day for margin.
Tracking on-site campaigns alongside Shopify reports
If you run on-site messages during the sale, read their results next to Shopify's, not on top of them. Atomato's analytics show impressions, clicks and attributed revenue on every plan, including the free Starter plan. Revenue is attributed when a shopper clicks a NotiFeed, NotiPop or NotiSell (Scale plan) message, adds products to cart within the window (six hours for links to products, collections or search, three hours for other store pages) and checks out in the same browser within 30 days. Only the products added in the window count, without shipping or the rest of the order. Attributed revenue is current each time you open a report, while impressions and clicks update every six hours (UTC). Because each tool counts sales its own way, read Atomato revenue as a share of your total store revenue for the same dates, allowing for Atomato's days running on UTC while Shopify uses your store's time zone, as explained in why Atomato numbers differ from Shopify.
Common questions
How often does Shopify Live View update?
Shopify's Live View help page doesn't give a refresh interval. It defines the windows instead: visitors right now covers the past 5 minutes, customer behavior the last 10 minutes, and the totals count from midnight in your store's time zone. During peak traffic Live View can show a delay message, which Shopify says typically resolves within 1 to 2 hours.
Why is Live View different from Google Analytics?
Shopify lists the 5 minute counting window, bot filtering, JavaScript or cookie blocking, time zone differences and cookie consent banners as reasons. Some difference is expected.
Does Live View include sales from other channels?
Total sales and total orders include the online store and other channels. Sessions, visitors and customer behavior are online store activity.
Can I use Live View on my phone?
Yes. In the Shopify app, open Analytics from the menu and tap Live View. Streamer mode is desktop only.
Next step
This week, open Live View and your Analytics dashboard, arrange the cards you will need, bookmark Conversion rate breakdown and Sales by discount codes, and check Searches with no results now. Then run one test order with each Black Friday code so that the first thing you see on the day is sales, not a broken discount.
