Shopify discount combinations: how to stack Black Friday offers without losing margin

How Shopify discount combinations work, how to plan which Black Friday offers stack, and how to test every stack before the sale opens.

An orange glow above a dark field

Shopify discount combinations decide what happens when a shopper's cart qualifies for more than one offer. In Shopify, two discounts only stack when the settings on each one allow it. If they don't, Shopify applies the single best discount for the cart. So the answer to "how do I combine discounts on Shopify" is a setting you choose per discount, not a store-wide switch.

That matters most in November. Black Friday usually means a sitewide sale, a free shipping offer, a newsletter code still in circulation and maybe a gift with purchase, all live at once. Set the combinations without a plan and a shopper can end up with far more off than you meant, or with a code that refuses to work at checkout.

This guide walks through how combinations work, how to map your Black Friday offers before you build them, and how to test the stacks so the final price is the one you planned.

How Shopify discount combinations work

Shopify groups every discount into one of three classes, according to its help center page on combining discounts:

  • Product discounts apply to specific items or collections.
  • Order discounts apply to the cart subtotal.
  • Shipping discounts change the shipping cost.

Some pairs can combine on every store: order discounts with free shipping discounts, product discounts with free shipping discounts, and product discounts with other product discounts on separate items. Two more pairs, product discounts with order discounts and order discounts with other order discounts, need an eligible store. Shopify's page lists the eligibility rules: the store doesn't use checkout.liquid customizations and doesn't use a specific app named there. If those pairs don't show for you, check that page first.

Stacking two product discounts on the same line item is a Shopify Plus feature. On Plus, it works through reciprocal tags set under Combinations > Product discounts > Multiple per product.

The order Shopify applies stacked discounts

When discounts do combine, Shopify applies them in a fixed order:

  1. Product discounts come off individual items first.
  2. Order discounts apply to the revised subtotal.
  3. Shipping discounts apply last.

One detail catches people out. If two percentage order discounts combine, each is calculated on the original subtotal. Shopify's own example: 10% and 20% off a $100 order totals $70, or 30% off. Run that math for every pair you allow, because the combined number is what shoppers will actually pay.

Know the limits before you plan

Shopify sets a few hard limits that shape a Black Friday plan, all from the combinations page:

  • A store can have at most 25 active automatic discounts, and that total includes discounts created by apps.
  • A customer can use at most 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on the same order.
  • Two shipping discounts can't apply to the same order.
  • Combinations work on orders through the Online Store, the Storefront API and Shopify POS. They aren't available on external checkouts such as Facebook, Instagram or Google.
  • Editing a discount to allow combinations doesn't change orders where it was already used.

Shopify also notes that custom manual discounts, such as one added to a POS cart or a draft order, always apply whatever the combination settings say.

Map every offer before you build it

Most stacking surprises come from discounts created weeks apart by different people. Before you touch the admin, write one list of every discount that will be live during the sale, including old ones nobody switched off:

  • The sitewide or collection sale.
  • Free shipping offers.
  • Welcome and newsletter codes.
  • Loyalty, referral or influencer codes.
  • Buy X get Y or gift with purchase offers.

Next to each, write its class (product, order or shipping), whether it's a code or automatic, and which other classes it should combine with during the sale. Then decide the worst case: the deepest stack a shopper could legally reach. If that number hurts your margin, change the plan on paper now, not on the Monday of the sale.

To find what already exists, go to Discounts in your Shopify admin, use the filter button, choose Add filter, then Combines with. That lists every discount set to stack with a given class.

Set combinations on each discount

Combinations live inside each discount. To create a sale discount, Shopify's amount off discount guide gives this path: Discounts > Create discount, then Amount off products or Amount off orders. Then:

  1. Under Method, pick Discount code or Automatic discount. An automatic discount needs a title but no code.
  2. Set the value and what it applies to.
  3. Add any Minimum purchase requirements. A minimum purchase amount counts product prices only, not shipping or taxes.
  4. Choose Customer eligibility: all customers, specific customers, customer segments or markets.
  5. For a code, set Maximum discount uses if you want a total cap or one use per customer.
  6. Under Combinations, tick only the classes this discount should stack with.
  7. Set the Active dates, and click Set end date so the offer stops on its own. Dates follow your store's time zone.

Remember that a combination has to be allowed on both sides. If your sale allows order discounts but the welcome code doesn't allow product discounts, the two won't stack. For existing discounts, open each one, adjust Combinations and click Save.

A worked example: one skincare cart, two plans

Say you sell skincare. These numbers are a hypothetical example, not results from a real store. For Black Friday you plan an automatic 20% off all products, free shipping on orders over $75, and you still have a 10% off order code, WELCOME10, in your welcome email.

Before: every discount is set to combine with everything, on a store eligible for product with order combinations. A shopper with $120 of products gets 20% off, which brings the subtotal to $96. WELCOME10 then takes 10% off that revised subtotal, so they pay $86.40 for products, plus free shipping if the cart qualifies. That's 28% off products, deeper than the 20% you advertised.

After: you set the 20% sale to combine with shipping discounts only, and leave WELCOME10 unable to combine with product discounts during the sale. The same shopper gets the 20% sale and free shipping. If they enter WELCOME10, Shopify tells them the code can't be combined and keeps the better offer for the cart. The headline deal stays exactly as advertised.

Neither plan is wrong. The point is to choose the stack on purpose and know the deepest price before shoppers find it.

Test every stack before the sale opens

Build the discounts a few days early. A discount with a future start date isn't active yet, so it can't be tested at checkout. Instead, duplicate each one as a test copy, set its Customer eligibility to a specific test customer, and place test orders for each pair you allowed and each pair you blocked. Deactivate the copies when you're done. A shareable link helps here: open a discount, click Promote > Get a shareable discount code, and the discount applies to that browser's next checkout cart. Shopify's page on managing discounts notes that each link carries one discount, only active discounts work, and link discounts still follow your combination settings and the 5 code limit.

Use a private browser window for each test so an earlier link doesn't stay in the cart. Check the subtotal, the shipping line and the error message for blocked codes.

Pre-sale combinations checklist

  • Every live discount is listed with its class, method and allowed combinations.
  • The deepest legal stack has been calculated and accepted.
  • Active automatic discounts, including app discounts, are under 25.
  • Old welcome, influencer and test codes have end dates or are deactivated.
  • Each sale discount has a start date and an end date, and you've checked the store's time zone.
  • Each allowed pair and each blocked pair has been tested in a real cart.
  • Your sale copy matches what checkout actually does.

Tell shoppers which offers stack

A shopper who reads "20% off everything" and then sees their welcome code rejected may assume the store is broken. Say it plainly where they shop: on the sale banner, the collection page and in your emails, for example "20% off sitewide plus free shipping over $75. Other codes can't be added during the sale." If you use Atomato, a NotiFeed announcement in the on-site feed can carry the same line with a button to the sale collection. On Starter (free) you get one active NotiFeed campaign with one message; Scale and Enterprise+ add up to six messages per campaign and start and end scheduling, so the message can go live and come down with the sale. Atomato doesn't create discount codes for feed announcements, so the sale discount itself is still set up in Shopify. Atomato times follow your computer's time zone, so check them against your store's. The help article on promoting a sale covers the setup.

What combinations won't fix

  • A weak offer. Stacking more discounts doesn't make a sale more appealing if the core deal isn't clear. Ideas for raising order value without more discounting are in 7 ways to raise order value without another discount.
  • Tiered or multi-step discounts. Shopify's built-in discount types don't cover tiered offers; its docs point to discount apps or, on Plus, Checkout Blocks.
  • External checkouts. Combinations don't apply on checkouts such as Facebook, Instagram or Google.
  • Codes already spread around. A code shared on a coupon site keeps working until it ends or you deactivate it. Customers who enter a deactivated code see "Unable to find a valid discount matching the code entered."

Common questions

Can customers use more than one discount code on Shopify?

Yes, when each code's combination settings allow it. A customer can use up to 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on one order.

Why aren't my Shopify discounts combining?

Check that both discounts allow each other's class, that your store is eligible for product with order or order with order pairs, and that the order isn't coming through an external checkout. Also note that two shipping discounts never combine, and two product discounts on the same line item need Shopify Plus.

Do automatic discounts combine with discount codes?

They can. If both are active and each one's settings allow the other's class, they combine when a customer applies the code. If not, Shopify applies the best discount for the cart.

How do I see which discounts were used during the sale?

Shopify's discount codes page points to the Sales by discount report, which shows how often codes were used.

Next step

Write your list of every live discount today, set the combinations on each one, and test the stacks a few days before the sale opens. For the rest of your sale preparation, see the Black Friday Cyber Monday planning page, and make sure shoppers can find your holiday return policy before they buy.
