Extended holiday returns: telling gift shoppers on-site before they buy

How to show an extended holiday return window in your store's feed and on product pages with NotiFeed and NotiPop, and take it down on time.

A small orange moon in a blue sky

Gift buyers have one question your product page rarely answers: what happens if it isn't right? If your store extends its return window for the holidays, that answer belongs where shoppers make the decision, not only on a policy page in the footer.

This guide shows how to set out an extended holiday return window, write it as a short on-site message, show it in your store's feed and at the moment a shopper hesitates, and take it down on the right day.

You will finish with a sample message you can copy, a timing plan for November to January, and a clear list of what Atomato does and does not do with returns.

Settle the policy before you write a word

An on-site message can only repeat a policy you already run. Decide these five things first, then update the refund policy in Shopify so the message and the policy say the same thing:

  • The purchase window. The first and last order dates the holiday terms cover.
  • The return deadline. One fixed date is easier to read than a count of days from delivery.
  • Exclusions. Final sale items, personalized products or anything your normal policy already excludes.
  • Who pays return shipping. Say it, whichever way you decide.
  • Exchanges and gift returns. Whether a gift recipient can return or exchange without the buyer.

If you are writing or rewriting the policy itself, our Shopify return policy guide covers the setup.

Put the return window in the feed

A NotiFeed message sits in the feed shoppers open from the bell. It suits a policy note: shoppers can read it when they choose, and it stays there for the whole season. NotiFeed is on every plan. On Starter (Free), one NotiFeed campaign can be active, with one message. To set it up, click Create Campaign, open Promote a sale or launch and choose Build your own. Write the Title (up to 120 characters) and the Description (up to 200). Under Click behavior, Open link shows the whole message at once, which suits a short policy note. Switch on Call to action, give the button text such as "See holiday returns", and in Button link type the address of your refund policy. Shopify serves it at /policies/refund-policy. Untick Open in new tab so shoppers stay on your store.

Click behavior and Call to action on a NotiFeed message.

Put the deadline in the title, not the description. A shopper skimming the feed should get the whole point from one line.

A worked example: one message, before and after

Say a candle store accepts holiday returns until 31 January for orders placed between 1 November and 24 December, with sale bundles excluded.

Before:

Title: Happy holidays from all of us

Description: We have updated our policies for the season. Read more on our website.

After:

Title: Gifts bought now can be returned until 31 January

Description: Covers orders placed 1 November to 24 December. Sale bundles are final sale.

Button: See holiday returns

The second version answers the gift buyer's question in the title, names the dates the terms cover and states the exclusion before anyone has to ask. Every detail matches the policy page it links to.

Answer the question when a shopper pauses

The feed waits for shoppers to open it. A NotiPop appears over the page without blocking it, so it can bring the return window to a shopper who is still deciding. On Starter (Free), one NotiPop campaign can be active, with one NotiPop. Under Display rules, pick a trigger in Appear after. Inactivity, which waits 5 to 60 seconds with no mouse movement, clicks, key presses, taps or scrolling, fits a "still deciding?" note such as your returns policy. Hide after sets how long it stays, from 4 to 120 seconds, and the default is 8. A shopper needs time to read a date, so give it longer than the default.

Display rules on a NotiPop campaign. Choose Delay, Scrolled or Inactivity, and how long the message stays.

Then narrow where it shows. Switch on Target visitors based on and add a Page URL rule that Contains /products/, so the note appears on product pages where the gift decision happens.

Two things to plan around. Once a shopper closes, clicks, hovers over or taps a NotiPop, or lets it hide on its own, it doesn't show again on later pages in that browser. And an Exit Intent rule fires only when the mouse pointer leaves through the top of the window, so it doesn't work on phones. For more on timing, see how to choose NotiPop timing.

Start and end it on the right day

A return window that is still on show after it closes is worse than no message. On Scale and Enterprise+, the Schedule tab starts and ends a campaign on its own.

The Schedule tab. Times are picked by the hour, and the start must be in the future.

Open the campaign's Schedule tab, choose Run the campaign according to the schedule with a defined start and end date, and set the start for the first day of your purchase window. Tick Set end date and set the end for the last order date the holiday terms cover. Times are in whole hours and use the time zone of the computer you schedule from, not your store's, so convert them first if the two differ. The schedule belongs to the whole campaign, so give the return message its own campaign rather than adding it to a sale campaign with different dates. See Schedule a campaign for every rule.

On Starter (Free), there are no dates. Save the campaign as Active when the window opens, and pause it from Campaigns on the last day.

When the window closes, the message should change, not just vanish. Shoppers who bought in December still need to know the deadline. Editing a message doesn't mark it as new for shoppers who have seen it, so run a second campaign from the day after your last order date to the return deadline, with a message such as "Holiday orders can still be returned until 31 January". On Scale and Enterprise+, schedule it now; on Starter (Free), start it when you pause the first. Our post on what the unread badge means explains why.

Show the right terms to the right shoppers

Each message has its own Customer Segments and Target visitors based on settings, on every plan. If signed-in members get a longer window, put that version in a message limited to signed-in customers or a member segment, and keep the standard version for everyone else.

Atomato can't target by location. If your holiday terms differ by country, say so in the message ("UK orders: returns until 31 January") and link to the policy that sets out each market's terms.

What this does not do

  • It doesn't change your Shopify policy, create return labels or process returns. Those stay in Shopify and your returns tools.
  • It doesn't show on Shopify checkout, the thank-you page or POS.
  • There are no frequency caps or traffic splits. Test new wording as back-to-back campaigns.
  • A click to your policy page is a click to a page that isn't a product, collection or search page, so any later add to cart counts within 3 hours, as assisted revenue only. Attributed revenue means an order followed a click; it doesn't prove the message caused the sale. See how Atomato attributes revenue.

Next step

Write your holiday return terms down, then build one NotiFeed message with the deadline in the title and a link to your refund policy. Add the Inactivity NotiPop on product pages if your plan has room, and set the end date before you publish. If you are planning the rest of the season, pair it with your holiday shipping cutoff messages and our Black Friday Cyber Monday plan.
