A guide to announcing your loyalty program on your Shopify store

How to announce a loyalty program on your own store, with one message for visitors, one for signed-in members and a short reminder where points matter.

Red lit rock against black

You have set up a loyalty program, or changed the one you have, and now shoppers need to hear about it. The shoppers most likely to join are the ones on your store right now, about to place an order that could earn them points.

This guide shows how to announce a loyalty program on your Shopify store itself: one launch message every shopper can read, a second version for members who are signed in, and a short reminder on product and cart pages where points matter. With Black Friday close, it is a good moment to have all three ready.

What an on-site loyalty announcement needs to say

On your store, ask: what does a shopper need to know in the few seconds they give a message? Keep it to three things.

  • What they get. The earn rate and the first reward, in numbers: "1 point for every $1, and 100 points is $5 off."
  • What it costs them. Usually a free account. Say so, because "join" can sound like a fee.
  • Where to go. One button to the page that explains the program or opens the sign-up.

Put the launch message in the feed

A NotiFeed message sits in the feed shoppers open from the bell in your header, so the announcement stays there for the whole visit. NotiFeed is on every plan, including Starter (Free).

The bell in a store's header, with the feed open.

To set it up, create a campaign from the Promote a sale or launch goal, choose Build your own, and write a title of up to 120 characters and a description of up to 200. Under Click behavior, Open link shows the whole message at once, while Expand details shows the title first and the description after a click. Switch on Call to action, enter Button text (required with Expand details) and set the Button link to your loyalty page. The full steps are in Add an announcement to the NotiFeed.

If your loyalty app opens its sign-up in a widget rather than on a page, the Custom JavaScript box under Call to action can run your own code to open another app's widget instead of following the link. Add the Button link first, as saving still needs it.

Write one message for visitors and one for members

A shopper who is not signed in needs the pitch. A member who has already joined does not want to be asked again. Atomato's Customer Segments setting, on every plan, lets each message choose its audience.

One store, two shoppers. Customer Segments decides who sees each message.
  • Set the launch message to Visitors (not signed in), so the join pitch reaches shoppers browsing as guests.
  • For members, use Specific customer segments. Some loyalty apps can tag members in Shopify, so check yours. If it does, build a segment on that tag under Customers > Segments and pick it in Atomato. That message can say "You're earning points on this order" and link to the rewards page.
  • If you can't tell members apart, Customers (signed in) reaches every signed-in shopper, members or not, so word that message for both: "Earn points on this order. See how rewards work."

A returning customer who isn't signed in counts as a visitor, so word the visitor message for account holders too: "Sign in or create a free account to start earning." The details are in Show a campaign to specific customers or segments, and the wider approach is in How to use Shopify customer segments for on-site messages.

On Scale ($49.99 a month) and Enterprise+ ($149.99 a month), one NotiFeed campaign holds up to six messages, each with its own audience, so both versions can live in one campaign. On Starter (Free), a campaign has one message and one NotiFeed campaign can be active, so use the NotiFeed for one audience and a NotiPop for the other.

Remind shoppers where points matter

A short NotiPop can add a reminder at the moment points are easiest to picture: on a product page, or once something is in the cart. NotiPop is on every plan, but Starter (Free) allows one active NotiPop campaign with one message, so pick one use. More than one reminder needs Scale or Enterprise+.

NotiPop on desktop and on a phone.
  • Product pages. Switch on Target visitors based on and add a Page URL rule that Contains /products/. Under Appear after, choose Scrolled and a percentage, such as 25%, so it shows once the shopper is reading.
  • Cart. Add a Cart items rule that Is greater than 0, and set it to Visitors (not signed in) if it asks shoppers to sign in. The NotiPop shows once the cart has something in it, though with some themes a cart change only counts from the next page load.

Once a shopper closes, clicks, hovers over or taps a NotiPop, or lets it hide on its own, it doesn't show again on later pages in that browser. The rules are in Show a campaign on certain pages, devices or carts.

A worked example: before and after

Take a skincare store launching a points program three weeks before Black Friday. Its first draft of the feed message read:

Introducing Glow Rewards. Our new loyalty program is here. Learn more.

It names the program but not the benefit, and "Learn more" gives no reason to click. The rewrite:

Title: Earn points on every order, starting today

Description: Get 1 point for every $1 you spend. 100 points is $5 off. Joining is free with an account.

Button: Start earning

The version for a member segment:

Title: Your Glow Rewards points are adding up

Description: This order earns points too. Check your balance and rewards.

Button: See my rewards

And the cart NotiPop for visitors: "This order earns Glow Rewards points. Sign in to collect them." The program and numbers are a sample, so use your own.

Plan the dates around your sale

On Scale and Enterprise+, the Schedule tab gives a campaign a start and end date, so the launch can go live on the morning the program opens. A schedule belongs to the whole campaign, not to each message. On Starter (Free), start and pause the campaign by hand.

If you run a Black Friday offer in the feed too, keep the loyalty message as a separate campaign on Scale or Enterprise+, so it can stay after the sale ends. The sequencing is covered in How to plan Black Friday on-site messages that don't stack, and the VIP side in Who should get Black Friday early access.

When the program changes, such as a new reward tier, add a new message rather than editing the old one. A shopper who has seen a message won't see it as new again, even if you rewrite every word. On Starter (Free), that means pausing the old campaign and creating a new one.

What this does not do

  • Atomato doesn't run the loyalty program. Points, tiers and rewards stay in your loyalty app.
  • It doesn't read points balances from loyalty apps. The one exception: on Enterprise+, a NotiFeed or NotiPop created from the SKIO integration page can show a signed-in subscriber's SKIO reward credits.
  • It has no sign-up form for the program. The button sends shoppers to your loyalty page or runs your own code.
  • It doesn't show on Shopify checkout or the thank-you page.
  • It can't target by location or browsing history.
  • Clicks are counted, but a link to another website or a button that runs your own code isn't counted for revenue.

Next step

Write the visitor message first, with the earn rate, the first reward and one button, and publish it as a NotiFeed campaign. Add the member version and the cart reminder once the first one is live. Plans and what each includes are on the pricing page.
