How to choose Shopify popup triggers without stacking interrupts

Atomato NotiPop example: one delay trigger chosen and the scroll and exit triggers dropped, over a photograph of a thin crescent moon

Choose one primary trigger per job — not page load plus scroll plus exit in the same session. Stacked interrupts teach shoppers to dismiss on sight, so the welcome code, free-shipping progress, and cart nudge all lose.

This guide links commonly used Shopify popup triggers (like time delay, scroll, exit intent, inactivity, add-to-cart, and page load) with their respective jobs and surfaces. It contains a decision table and a before/after plan as well as a simple rule: one capped interrupt, then a reopenable feed card for the second touch. The popup app should be kept with the ESP/SMS; stop burning the session with overlapping fires.

One primary trigger per job

A trigger determines when an interrupt can appear. The job is what you are asking for (welcome, free-shipping progress, cart help). Three triggers for one welcome creative are three covers of the page — not coverage.

Principle: each live interrupt should have only one primary trigger. If you want to show a second moment, use less distracting surfaces or a feed card which the shopper can reopen — avoid adding exit intent on top of scroll on top of load.

Example: a single delayed welcome popup (8–12s after browse) is sufficient. Scroll and exit should not re-fire the same 10% off that session. Free-shipping progress should be in a feed or soft corner post add-to-cart, not a second fullscreen.

What to do: make a list of every popup and banner that can fire today. For each, write down the job and the trigger. If two rows have the same session and both cover the page, one should be demoted.

Trigger decision table

Use this map before you turn another trigger on. Mark page-load-as-only-welcome as rare. Prefer time delay for welcome after a short browse. Reserve exit intent for leavers when nothing else interrupted. Put reopenable second touches in the feed.

Trigger Allowed as primary interrupt? Best job Prefer surface Second touch without new interrupt Notes
Page load / immediate Usually no (rare welcome only) Emergency / legal notice, or a rare first-paint welcome test Quiet banner or none; popup only if you accept high dismiss Feed holds the same offer after dismiss Suppress after dismiss; never combine with scroll + exit in one session
Time delay (e.g. 8–12s) Yes Welcome / list capture after short browse One timed popup Feed card with code + free-shipping threshold Best default primary for welcome; suppress siblings for the session
Scroll depth Sometimes Content-aware promo on long PDP or collection Soft corner or quiet banner; popup only if no welcome yet Feed: same offer reopenable Do not stack with load + exit for the same creative
Exit intent Yes, conditional Last chance for leavers who saw no other interrupt One popup only if no prior interrupt this session Feed already holds offer; ESP/SMS after leave Skip exit if welcome or ATC interrupt already fired
Inactivity Sometimes Soft reminder after idle on cart or PDP Quiet banner or feed ping — avoid fullscreen Feed card stays available Easy to feel spammy; keep soft and once
Add-to-cart / cart change Yes for progress jobs Free-shipping / free-gift progress, AOV nudge Soft corner, progress bar, or feed — popup only at true threshold Update remaining amount in feed Prefer non-cover surfaces; pair with NotiFeed for reopen

Use NotiPop for the single capped interrupt when the job needs attention. Put the same offer in NotiFeed so dismissed shoppers can reopen without another exit or scroll re-fire. That pairs with when to use a popup, the feed, or both for the same offer — here the filter is which trigger, not only surface. Steps: map jobs, pick one trigger, assign feed for second touch

  1. List every on-site interrupt and its current trigger (load, delay, scroll, exit, idle, ATC).
  2. Write the job next to each (welcome, progress, cart nudge, drop, restock).
  3. Collapse duplicates: one job → one primary trigger.
  4. Set welcome to time delay once; suppress re-popup after dismiss for the session (and a multi-day cookie if you already use one).
  5. Move free-shipping / gift progress to feed or soft ATC — not a second fullscreen.
  6. Gate exit intent: fire only if no other interrupt fired this session.
  7. Keep ESP/SMS for shoppers who leave; do not replace email with a third overlay.
  8. Measure dismiss rate and whether the primary ask still converts after the rewrite — not only popup views.

Practical Atomato observation: NotiPop is for one capped interrupt; NotiFeed holds the same offer reopenable so you do not need exit or scroll to re-fire it. Same stack — popup, feed, ESP — trigger discipline first. For quieter copy and one clear action, see what makes an on-site message convert. Before and after: stacked triggers vs one delayed welcome + feed progress

Before (welcome on load + scroll + exit):

Popup on first paint: Get 10% off — enter your email!
…dismiss…
Scroll 50%: Wait — still want 10% off?
…browse…
Exit intent: Last chance for 10%!
…add to cart…
Another overlay: You're $18 from free shipping!

Problems: four covers for related jobs, the same code three times, and a shopper trained to close everything. Exit never gets a clean shot.

After (one delayed welcome + feed progress; exit only if clear):

Delayed popup once (8–12s, session suppress after dismiss): Welcome — Get 10% off your first order. Would you like the code?
Feed card (reopenable): WELCOME10 · Spend $50 to get free shipping · [Shop bestsellers]
After add-to-cart: soft progress in feed — You're just $12 away from free shipping — How about adding a pouch?
Exit intent: only if no interrupt has been fired yet this session (otherwise skip)
ESP/SMS is sent only after they leave with items in cart — not a fifth overlay

The after version uses the interrupt once, maintains the offer as a reopenable option, and utilizes the exit for those who did not see a cover at all.

Mistakes checklist

  • Page-load welcome plus scroll plus exit for the same code in one session
  • Exit intent always on, even after a welcome or ATC interrupt already fired
  • Scroll-depth popup stacked on top of an immediate load popup
  • Using inactivity fullscreen as a second "welcome"
  • Free-shipping progress as another cover instead of feed or soft corner
  • No suppress after dismiss — reload equals the same stacked triggers
  • Measuring trigger fires instead of dismiss rate and whether the primary ask still converts

If you experience a spike in dismiss rates after adding a trigger, it's likely you've stacked them together, not under-triggered.

Next step

Audit today's triggers against the decision table. Collapse each job to one primary fire, move second touches into a reopenable feed card, and gate exit intent so it only runs when the session is still clean. Keep the popup and ESP you already use.
