How to schedule a Shopify theme switch for a sale

A large grey moon beside a small blue earth

You can schedule a Shopify theme to publish for a sale, then switch back when the event ends. In Atomato that job is Theme Launcher, shown as Schedule a store update. It publishes a theme you choose at a time you set. It can switch to another theme afterward. Shoppers never see a Theme Launcher message. They only see the new theme.

This guide covers the schedule, the rollback, and the embed checklist so your bell and campaigns still work after the switch.

What Theme Launcher does

Theme Launcher is a store update tool, not an on-site campaign. You pick the theme that should go live, set when it publishes, and optionally pick the theme that should replace it when the sale or holiday ends.

Example: your usual theme stays live until Friday at midnight. Your sale theme publishes then. On Monday morning, Theme Launcher switches back to the usual theme.

What to do: open Schedule a store update in Atomato. Choose the sale theme, the publish time, and the theme that should return after the event. Confirm both themes are ready before you rely on the schedule.

Theme Launcher is included on Free. Treat it as theme timing, not as a campaign schedule for messages.

It is not a shopper message

Theme Launcher does not put a card in NotiFeed. It does not show a NotiPop. It does not collect a signup. Shoppers see nothing from Theme Launcher itself.

Example: a shopper who lands at 12:01 after your sale theme publishes sees the new storefront layout and products as you built them in that theme. They do not see a toast that says the theme changed.

What to do: plan Theme Launcher for theme publish and rollback only. Put sale copy, offers, and reminders in your NotiFeed or NotiPop campaigns, or in the tools you already use for popup, email, and SMS. Atomato works alongside those tools. It does not replace them, and it does not send emails or texts itself.

Turn the Atomato embed on in every theme you will publish

Nothing from Atomato shows until the app embed is on in the live theme. The embed is switched on separately in each theme. That includes any theme Theme Launcher will publish.

Example: your usual theme has the embed on, so the bell works today. Your sale theme never got the embed. At midnight the sale theme goes live and the bell disappears until someone turns the embed on in that theme.

What to do before you schedule:

  1. Open the sale theme in the Shopify theme editor and switch the Atomato app embed on
  2. Open the theme that will return after the event and confirm the embed is on there too
  3. Preview each theme and confirm the bell or feed still appears where you expect

Skip this and the schedule can still publish the theme while Atomato stays dark on the storefront.

Before and after: midnight publish versus a scheduled switch

The same sale can fail or land cleanly based on how you publish the theme.

Before, a manual midnight publish:

Someone publishes the sale theme by hand after the day ends. The Atomato embed was never turned on in that theme. The storefront looks right for the sale, but the bell and campaigns are gone. After the weekend, the sale theme is still live because no one switched back.

After, a scheduled switch with the embed checked:

Theme Launcher publishes the sale theme at the set time and switches to the usual theme when the event ends. The embed is already on in both themes. Shoppers see the sale storefront on time, and Atomato keeps working through the switch.

What to do: treat the schedule as two publishes, sale theme in and usual theme back, not as one late-night login. Verify the embed in both themes first.

Sale campaigns still need their own messages and timing

Theme Launcher only changes which theme is live. It does not start or stop your on-site campaigns for you. For campaign start and end times on paid plans, see how to schedule Shopify on-site campaigns to start and stop on time.

Example: your sale theme publishes Friday night. Your NotiFeed sale card and NotiPop reminder still need their own copy, audience, and timing. If those campaigns are inactive or aimed at the wrong pages, shoppers get a new theme with no sale message in the feed.

What to do: line up campaign messages with the same window as the theme switch. For BFCM message stacking across the storefront, see how to plan Shopify BFCM on-site messages without stacking interrupts. For how often those messages should appear, see how to set Shopify on-site campaign frequency.

Mistakes that break a scheduled theme sale

  • Treating Theme Launcher like a message shoppers see instead of a theme publish
  • Leaving the Atomato embed off in the sale theme or in the theme that returns afterward
  • Publishing the sale theme on time, then forgetting the rollback theme
  • Expecting the theme switch alone to activate sale campaigns
  • Changing theme code late without rechecking the embed and the bell placement

Nothing from Atomato shows on checkout or Shopify POS. Plan sale messaging for the storefront themes shoppers browse, not for checkout screens.

What to do next

Pick the sale theme and the theme that should return. Switch the Atomato embed on in both. Set Schedule a store update for publish and rollback. Build the sale messages in NotiFeed or NotiPop for the same window. Preview both themes before the clock hits your start time.
