How to target Shopify on-site messages with UTM tags from ads

Paid ads send shoppers to a specific promise. The landing page may match the ad, but the on-site message that appears next often does not. The same welcome discount can land on a shopper who already clicked a flash sale, a restock, or a VIP offer.
UTM tags fix that gap. When a campaign only runs for shoppers who arrive with a given utm_campaign or utm_source, the message stays tied to the ad they clicked. Everyone else keeps the quieter default path.
This guide shows how to pair Shopify on-site messages with UTM tags so ad traffic sees the right offer once, without spraying the same discount across the store.
What UTM targeting is for
UTM tags are the tracking parameters you already add to ad and email links. Atomato can use those same tags as a campaign condition, next to page URL, device, cart value, cart items, cart products and exit intent.
Use UTM targeting when the offer belongs to one traffic source. A Meta sale campaign, a Google branded search ad and a Klaviyo win-back link can each open a different on-site message. The shopper still chooses when to look. A NotiFeed waits behind the bell. A NotiPop can appear without blocking the page when the moment fits.
Do not use UTM tags as a stand-in for signed-in segments. Segments and chosen customers only match customers signed in to their account. Ad traffic is usually not signed in, so UTM conditions cover that gap.
Map each ad to one on-site job
Before you build a campaign, write one line for each active ad set: the offer, the landing URL and the UTM values on the link. Give each ad set one on-site job. If two ads share the same job, share one campaign. If they promise different discounts, give each its own campaign.
Keep the rest of the store calm. Shoppers who arrive without those tags should not see the ad-only offer. Put the lasting details, such as dates and shipping cutoffs, in the feed so anyone can open them later. For Black Friday planning, pair this with your BFCM on-site message plan.
Build the campaign around the tag
Start from the goal that matches the job. Promote a sale or launch opens NotiFeed templates. Encourage shoppers to take action opens NotiPop templates. Increase order value opens NotiSell. Grow my email & SMS list opens NotiEmail when your plan includes it.
Add a condition for the UTM field you control in the ad platform. Prefer utm_campaign when each ad set has its own name. Use utm_source when several campaigns from one channel should share one message. A campaign can require all conditions or any one. Combine a UTM tag with a page URL when the offer should only show on the landing page from that ad.
Keep the copy short and tied to the ad promise. Name the offer, the end time if it is real, and one next step. Do not invent a second discount on the page. Match the landing offer you already paid for, the same way you would when you match on-site offers to the landing page.
Before and after
Before: every paid click sees the same sitewide 15 percent welcome message, even when the ad already promised free shipping on jackets. The shopper gets two offers. Attributed revenue is hard to read because the click could belong to either campaign.
After: a NotiFeed campaign only runs when utm_campaign matches the jacket ad. The card repeats free shipping on jackets and links to the collection. Other shoppers still see the usual welcome path. You can read attributed revenue for the jacket campaign on its own.
Check results without mixing windows
Revenue is credited to clicks, never to views. A click on a product, collection or search link gives the shopper 6 hours to add products to the cart. Products added in that window count if the shopper orders them within 30 days in the same browser. Only those products count, not the whole order.
Call that figure attributed revenue. Do not add NotiEmail discount code redemptions into the same total. When a shopper clicks messages in two campaigns, the later click wins.
If you change the UTM name mid-flight, the old campaign stops matching new clicks. Schedule an end date on the old campaign and a start date on the new one so the handoff is clean.
What this does not do
UTM conditions do not detect restocks, form submissions or who is already on your email list. They do not replace your popup app, email platform or SMS platform. Atomato works alongside those tools and passes signups to the platform you already use.
Audience options stay limited to all shoppers, visitors who are not signed in, signed-in customers, chosen segments or chosen customers. Atomato does not target by location, browsing history or new versus returning visitors.
Next step
Pick one live ad set. Copy its UTM values into a single NotiFeed or NotiPop campaign, point the message at the same offer as the ad, and leave the rest of the store on your default path. When Q4 spend rises, each paid click keeps one clear on-site follow-through.
