How to target Shopify on-site messages by products in the cart

Cart products and cart items targeting show an on-site message only while the cart holds the products or item counts you set. A complementary offer can wait for the matching jacket. A quantity nudge can wait for two or more units. When the cart stops matching, the message is removed.
That split stops one complete-the-look line from spraying every cart the same way. Shoppers without the trigger product keep a quieter path. Shoppers who remove the matching item stop seeing the offer.
This guide shows how to use the cart products and cart items conditions in Atomato for Shopify on-site messages, how they differ from cart value, and what happens when the cart changes.
What cart products and cart items targeting is for
Cart products and cart items sit next to page URL, UTM tags, device, cart value and exit intent in Atomato's campaign conditions. You can require all conditions or any one. For a full decision list on when to use each mode, see how to combine Shopify on-site message targeting conditions.
Use cart products when the offer depends on which products are already in the cart. A belt or care kit belongs next to a specific jacket, not next to every empty homepage visit. Use cart items when the job depends on how many units are in the cart, such as a buy-two reminder, without caring which SKU started the count.
Do not use these conditions as a stand-in for signed-in segments. Segments and chosen customers only match customers signed in to their account. Cart products and cart items only answer what is in the cart at that moment.
For the wider map of page type plus cart state, see how to target on-site messages by page and cart. For dollar thresholds such as free shipping, see how to target Shopify on-site messages by cart value. This post zooms in on which products and how many items.
Pick cart products, cart items or cart value
Before you build, write one line: the cart rule, the offer and why that cart needs a message. If every cart should see the same short news, put it in NotiFeed without a cart rule. Add a cart condition only when the job changes with what is in the cart.
- Complementary product in the cart: use cart products. Show a NotiPop or feed card for the matching add-on only while that product remains.
- Quantity threshold: use cart items. Show a short buy-more line when the count hits the number you set.
- Free-shipping dollars: use cart value. Keep progress copy tied to the amount, as in the free-shipping and free-gift progress guide.
- Shared launch news: leave it in NotiFeed with no cart rule so any shopper can reopen the bell later.
Keep the rule honest. You choose which products or counts match. Atomato does not invent a complementary pair for you. When you want shoppers to add a recommended product from the feed, use NotiSell on a plan that includes it, and still gate that campaign with cart products when the add-on only fits certain carts.
Build the campaign around the condition
Start from the goal that matches the job. Encourage shoppers to take action opens NotiPop templates. Promote a sale or launch opens NotiFeed templates. Increase order value opens NotiSell. Grow my email & SMS list opens NotiEmail when your plan includes it.
Add a cart products condition for the products that should show the message, or a cart items condition for the count you care about. Combine it with page URL when the nudge should only show on the cart page or a product page. Combine it with cart value when both the product and a dollar threshold must match. Cart and exit intent conditions work for NotiFeed, NotiPop and NotiSell, not for signups.
If the cart changes and stops matching, the message is removed. That is the point of the rule. When a shopper removes the jacket that unlocked a belt offer, the complementary NotiPop should leave. If they add the jacket again, the matching campaign can show once more while the condition is true.
Write one clear line. Name the product or the count, the complementary offer and one next step. Do not stack a second sitewide percent-off on top of a product-matched add-on. Keep Add to cart clear on mobile the same way you would when you split desktop and mobile messages.
Before and after
Before: one sitewide complete-the-look offer runs on every page for every cart. Empty carts see an add-on they cannot use yet. Carts without the matching product still see the same offer. When the shopper removes the trigger item, the offer stays up. Attributed revenue mixes noise and true complementary clicks in one campaign.
After: a NotiPop or NotiFeed card runs only while cart products match the jacket you chose, with a short complementary line. Shared sale news stays in NotiFeed without a cart rule. When the jacket leaves the cart, the complementary message is removed. Each campaign has its own attributed revenue.
Before (every cart): Complete the look. Add a leather belt and care kit to any order. Free returns for 30 days. Shop bestsellers now.
After (cart products match the jacket): Your jacket is in the cart. Add the matching leather belt before checkout.
After (shared feed news): Weekend sale ends Sunday.
Check results without mixing jobs
Revenue is credited to clicks, never to views. A click to a product, collection or search page gives the shopper 6 hours to add products to the cart. Products added in that window count if the shopper orders them within 30 days in the same browser. Only those products count, not the whole order.
Call that figure attributed revenue. Do not claim lift. When a shopper clicks messages in two campaigns, the later click wins. Separate product-matched and sitewide campaigns make those totals easier to read.
Targeting is included on Free and on every plan. Campaign start and end scheduling needs a paid plan. Free still limits you to one active NotiFeed and one active NotiPop campaign, with one message each. Nothing shows on checkout or Shopify POS.
What this does not do
Cart products and cart items conditions do not detect restocks, form submissions or who is already on your email list. They do not replace your popup app, email platform or SMS platform. Atomato works alongside those tools and passes signups to the platform you already use.
They also do not rank complementary products by themselves. You pick the products or counts that show the message, and you write the offer. Audience options stay limited to all shoppers, visitors who are not signed in, signed-in customers, chosen segments or chosen customers. There is no location, browsing history or new versus returning visitor targeting.
Next step
Pick one complementary pair or quantity rule you already sell. Build one cart-products or cart-items campaign, leave shared news in the feed, and stop spraying the same complete-the-look line on carts that never held the matching product. When shoppers edit the cart, the condition keeps the message honest without a manual pause.
