How to use free-shipping and free-gift progress campaigns

Atomato NotiPop campaign example: a progress bar message telling the shopper they are close to free shipping, over a photo of the diamond ring moment of an eclipse

Progress campaigns for free-shipping and free-gift are also another strategy that can be implemented to move carts. The difference between a useful nudge and noise is how clear the progress steps are to the shopper. A progress campaign helps motivate the shopper to get items to add a little more when they learn they are only a few dollars short of the threshold. Thus, the customer will be informed of their current status, what unlocks next, and which products close the gap. They can then run it properly by following the steps here, which apply to a Shopify store.

Start with one threshold, not three

Choose between either free shipping or one free gift for the tester-run. Having two rewards competing for attention on the same order generally dulls both. Place the threshold above the average order value of your selection currently so the buyer feels the urge to add something and tell the shopper that the threshold is in easy-to-understand dollars.

Put the rule as a clear sentence: "Free shipping at $75" or "Free gift bag at $50." That sentence should be the campaign body. It should be at the forefront and not be hidden in a footnote.

Show remaining amount, not only the prize

When a shopper sees "Only $12 away," they are more likely to act quickly than when they only see a trophy icon. The remaining amount added is updated every time the cart is changed. For instance, if the cart goes down under the threshold, instead of telling that the reward is still locked, they must express that plainly.

A popup is nice on cart intent. A milder reminder in a NotiFeed notification helps returning visitors re-open the bell later in the same session. Some stores have both these surfaces; see why stores keep a popup and a notification feed.

Pair the bar with products that close the gap

Progress without a next product is half a campaign. Suggest two or three SKUs that fit the remaining dollars: a small add-on, a refill, or a related accessory. Keep the list short so the choice stays easy.

If you recommend from page or cart context, product cards shoppers can add from the message beat a generic "shop more" link. NotiSell is built for that kind of on-site product card inside the feed.

Free gift rules that protect margin

For a free gift, choose one SKU with healthy margin and reliable inventory. Cap the offer if stock is thin. Do not stack three gift SKUs as competing unlocks in one session. When the shopper is close, remind them once. When they cross the line, confirm the gift is in the cart so they do not abandon out of doubt.

Skip inventing "limited time" pressure unless the window is real. False urgency trains shoppers to ignore the next message.

Free shipping rules that stay honest

State whether the threshold includes discounts, gift cards, or only merchandise subtotal. Match what your Shopify shipping settings actually do. If free shipping applies only to certain regions or carriers, say that in the campaign or limit who sees it.

A progress campaign that promises free shipping the checkout cannot deliver will cost more trust than the order is worth.

Timing and audience

Show progress when it helps: cart page, after add-to-cart, or when the cart is within a sensible range of the threshold. Someone $60 away from a $75 unlock is a weaker fit than someone $8 away. Use page and cart conditions so the message appears when the remaining amount is close enough to feel attainable.

For patterns beyond progress bars, browse on-site campaigns every Shopify store should run.

Measure clicks, not only views

A view of the progress bar is not a conversion. Track clicks on the message and on the product cards that close the gap, then look at order value in a short window after the click. View-only impressions should not get revenue credit.

Atomato Analytics is built around that click attribution so you can keep the progress campaigns that raise basket size and pause the ones that only create noise. For a store-level look at on-site messaging, read the Heights case study. The Zibra case study is about a shop where most of the single brushes are placed below a $35 threshold for free shipping.

A simple week-one setup

1. Choose free shipping or one free gift.

2. Set one dollar threshold above current AOV.

3. Write one clear line that names the remaining amount.

4. Attach two products that commonly close the gap.

5. Show the campaign near cart intent; keep a quieter copy in the feed for return visits.

6. Review click and revenue attribution after a few days before adding a second reward.
