Keep your notification feed fresh and worth opening

What to post in the feed, how the unread badge works, and when to add, reorder or retire messages.

A notification feed stays worth opening when it holds a few current messages and the bell's badge lights up for real news. Post timely updates, add a new message when you have something new to say, and take old messages down when they stop being true.

What to post in the feed

The feed waits behind the bell instead of covering the page, so it suits news a shopper can read when they choose:

  • New drops and back in stock products, linked to the product or collection.
  • Shipping cutoffs, delivery delays and holiday hours.
  • Sales and limited-time offers, with the end date in the message.
  • Offers for signed-in or VIP customers.
  • Store news, such as a new collection or a returns policy change.

Under Create campaign, the Promote a sale or launch goal has NotiFeed templates for several of these, including Holiday Announcement, Urgent Offer and Member-Only Offer. Replace a template's sample image and details, such as holiday dates, with your own before it goes live. For wording, see Write on-site messages shoppers want to click.

How the unread badge works

The badge on the bell counts feed items the shopper hasn't seen yet, including NotiSell recommendations and NotiEmail signup cards. An item counts as seen once the shopper hovers over it or taps it. Opening the feed alone doesn't clear the badge.

Seen items stay in the feed but stop counting. Atomato remembers this in the shopper's browser, so on another device or browser the badge shows again. NotiPops never add to it.

Atomato remembers what a browser has seen. Use a private window to see it as a new shopper.

To re-announce, add a new message

Editing a message keeps it the same message. A shopper who has already seen it won't see it as new, even if you rewrite every word.

When your news changes, for example a sale reaches its last day, add a new message or a new campaign so the badge counts it again. Then remove the old message, so shoppers don't see two versions of the same news.

On Free (the app also calls it Starter), one NotiFeed campaign can be active, with one message. Pause or end it first: while it is active, Atomato won't save another NotiFeed campaign, even as a draft.

Keep each campaign short and in order

On Scale and Enterprise+, a campaign can hold up to six messages under Multi notifications. Six is a ceiling, not a target: fewer messages are quicker to read. Drag a message tab by its handle to set the order shoppers see.

The NotiFeed Setup tab. Each chip is one message in the campaign.

Across the whole feed, signup cards come first, then NotiSell recommendations, then NotiFeed messages, newest campaign first. Put the message you most want read at the front of its campaign.

Show messages where they matter

Each message in a campaign has its own Customer Segments and Target visitors based on settings, so one message can speak to everyone while another shows only on collection pages. The Bestseller Spotlight template already has a Page URL rule set to Contains /collections/.

Keep member offers to signed-in customers or a customer segment, so other shoppers don't open the feed to an offer they can't use. See Show different messages to new, returning and VIP customers.

Retire messages on time

An ended sale or a passed cutoff makes the whole feed look out of date. Plan the exit when you publish:

  • On Scale and Enterprise+, give time-bound campaigns an end date so they leave on their own. See Schedule a campaign to start and end.
  • To take a campaign down now, open it from Campaigns and click Pause campaign or End Early.
  • To take down one message, remove its tab in the editor and save. The first tab has no delete icon, so drag another message in front of it first.
  • To bring a seasonal message back, choose Duplicate as draft from the campaign's Edit menu under Campaigns. The copy's messages count as new for shoppers. It keeps the original's end date, so set new dates on the Schedule tab before you save it.
A campaign's menu in the list. Duplicate as draft opens the copy in the editor.

Remove deletes the campaign along with its analytics, so pause or end campaigns whose numbers you want to keep. See Pause, end, duplicate or delete a campaign.
